....to regret turning down a job

I don't really like my current job. I have been there for 6 years and haven't really ever felt part of a team and settled. However, it has good prospects for future roles and promotions.

I had an interview last week at a company that I have worked at before (briefly) and really enjoyed but left because it was further away. I turned down the job but I can't help but feel I have made the wrong decision. Have I made a mistake? What should I do? I can't carry on in a job I don't really enjoy can I? But I'd have to take a pay drop for this other company. Why did I turn it down!?

Call them tomorrow morning and explain you've had a change of circumstance and you'd like to accept their offer if it's still open to you.

Just say you were too hasty with your decision making and you've had a chance to reconsider.

If they say no, just ask them to keep you in mind in future.

I think you made the right decision, it doesn't make sense to go down the career ladder unless you don't need the extra money or responsibility. Wait and something better will come along.

I turned down a job recently as I thought the grass isn't greener. Now I think I wouldn't have applied if I was happy in my current role.

Do you objectively think you made the wrong decision?

Or are you feeling deflated because you feel stuck in your job without an immediate path out? Ie is your emotional response to the symbolism of an alternative job rather than this specific job you declined?

Was it just the pay cut that caused you to turn it down? Ask them to up their offer if you're still interested

Dont go back to that company, the reasons you left previously will still be there. Take this as a note to yourself that you really want to leave and keep looking. When the right opportunity comes up you'll know and will take the job.

It’s probably too late to get that specific job, and also your heart isn’t 100% in it or it would have been an enthusiastic yes at the time.

I think this is like how you always want to buy the house you know you can’t have!

You need to move on from your current job- just keep searching and the right one will come along for you.

It's difficult because I really liked the company and the people. They aren't able to pay as much as its a smaller company but I'm really missing being part of a proper team and not working so remotely as often.
The salary is the main reason that I turned it down as I can't really afford a pay drop but I want to work in a place that I feel a belong.
I don't really hate my job but Im not feeling challenged or satisfied.

I understand OP, I applied for 2 jobs at a similar time, was offered the first one and resigned, my employer offered me a huge pay rise to stay, which I did.
Almost immediate regret, i was bored and unchallenged in my current role, anyway about 4 weeks later I got the offer for job 2. Its slightly less salary than my lovely new pay rise but Ive accepted it, there are so many more benefits.
Its definitely my time to move on.
Keep looking OP and I'm sure something more suitable will come up for you.
