Liz Jones on refugees and getting a new dog for Christmas

I know it’s my own fault for reading La Jones, and mostly genuinely I know what I’m getting, read, roll my eyes and move on with my day without working myself up into a froth because life’s just too short and it’s basically her job to keep spouting nonsense.

But today’s column made my jaw drop. It’s like she’s taking the Private Eye female parody columnist Glenda as her spirit animal - great going when clearly she was one of the women who inspired it in the first place.

She’s getting a Romanian rescue dog delivered in time for Christmas to join her menagerie. Full column here mol.im/a/10302183 but this was the bit that just got me:

“I don’t really want another dog, but I couldn’t bear to imagine Teddy stuck in a pen in Romania, with the temperature well below zero, frozen and alone over Christmas. I’m now waiting for the text to say he has landed, a furry refugee. I can’t help but think of the people who drowned in the English Channel. The children. The pregnant woman. No one was waiting for them with a box full of toys and human food from Waitrose, as I am for Teddy. I want him to open his eyes on Christmas Day and know that he is loved.”

AIBU to think Liz Jones is (while clearly a bit broken in lots of ways herself) completely inappropriate and insensitive and her style of me-me-me writing is past its day?

YANBU, that’s disgusting.

What a prat and I bet she’s racist and couldn’t give a fuck about refugees,

Lockheart · 19/12/2021 08:05

Being generous, I think she makes a pretty good point about the unfortunately prevailing attitude to refugees coming to the UK.

LaurieFairyCake · 19/12/2021 08:07

Yes I agree - this might be a useful post for the right wing

Some of them will have dogs they love and might enable them to make the mental transition to people needing a warm home too

Kbish1 · 19/12/2021 08:13

Well aside from everything else, that dog is going to be sick as fuck eating human food on arrival.

Poor dog

zafferana · 19/12/2021 08:13

She's an idiot, but like Samantha Brick she's there to rile people up with her asinine and ill-thought-out ramblings. In this day and age, someone who gets others spitting feathers = clicks = revenue for advertisers. It's a grim state of affairs.

loislovesstewie · 19/12/2021 08:14

I've always found her to be completely self absorbed. She seems to have no idea of what happens in, what I will call for shorthand purposes, the real world. She also seems to think that writing intimate details of her relationships will somehow improve them, then wonders why they fail. TMI.

OhThatChicken · 19/12/2021 11:05

I definitely think she's kind of written herself into a horrible loop where her schtick is writing massively personal things about herself, her family and relationships which ends up actively harming herself, her family and relationships.

Who would want to spend time with her knowing that an outfit she thought looked common, a family disagreement or a present she deemed not a good enough equivalent to the overpriced candle she bought you could be written about with you having no right of reply?

Maybe that's why she spends so much time with animals!

I think she's programmed to self destruct which works out well for her column writing. I think she's so far down the rabbit hole though that she's just completely lost.

Karmakamelion · 19/12/2021 11:17

Having read the full article it seems that she wants the daily fail readers to think again about the refugees. It's slightly clumsy but actually she is trying to change the mindset of the readers.

thereisonlyoneofme · 19/12/2021 11:20

I cant see what she has done wrong ?

SpookyScarySkeletons · 19/12/2021 11:23

Why the fuck does she need to tell us the food is from Waitrose?

I read her column 3 times before I realised she is a self obsessed numpty.

Guavaf1sh · 19/12/2021 11:24

There are many many worse articles to get worked up about than this

Squeezita · 19/12/2021 11:25

I’ve just seen her article from 2011 at a Somalian refugee. The photos are so stage managed, it’s obvious she has zero connection with the people.

Compare this to Angelina Jolie who effortlessly interacts with the Afghan and Syrian refugees.

BringMeTea · 19/12/2021 11:28

Yeah, can't get worked up about this.

Chalk and cheese

I absolutely love animals, and my pets are very much part of my family , but I can see why it is extremely distasteful to use a dog having a warm safe home as a “starting point” to then think about humans who have no safe homes. It’s childish at best, inhumane at worst.

Gretaburley · 19/12/2021 11:44

@thereisonlyoneofme really!
When my df’s partner died of cancer my dsil told df she understood his grief as she felt the same when her cat died.
My mild mannered df was a bit upset to put it mildly!

ComtesseDeSpair · 19/12/2021 11:50

She’s self absorbed but she’s a journalist writing for a readership, and a significant proportion of that readership have the same skewed perspective. I recall the thread/s post the US withdrawal from Afghanistan earlier this year and that animal rescue wazzock who was prioritising getting his plane load of strays out. Oodles of posts agreeing that he was doing the right thing because animals are so wonderful and innocent; including one memorable post which I’ll quote verbatim from a poster who said, when said plane was given a take-off slot: “OMG, OMG they’re finally coming home, lots of lovely cats and dogs!” (and sadly I don’t think said poster was five years old.)

thereisonlyoneofme · 19/12/2021 11:52

WaningMoon So you are commenting on the juxtaposition of the two sentences then, would be Ok if they were the other way round ?

friendlycat · 19/12/2021 12:04

Yes she is well past her sell by date in terms of her writing. I'm actually surprised that she still has that column in the DM.

When she first came on the scene in that writing genre in the DM it was a new style following on from the "It Girls" who had that spot writing about their antics during the week. She had a bit of a freshness in her frankness but she lost her appeal many, many years ago.

It's all product placement, the same turgid regurgitated tripe, made up stories about fictional boyfriends (the Rock Star etc.) and so so very boring.

Initially you could see that she wrote to shock and stimulate conversation and a reaction, but it's even way past that as I just don't think many can even be bothered to read her column anymore.

I'm not too sure why the DM still pays her for that column as it hasn't worked for years in my opinion.

loislovesstewie · 19/12/2021 14:13

I mean she's 63 for crying out loud!!! when will she understand anything?

Suzanne999 · 19/12/2021 14:17

No idea who Liz Jones is but she sounds like a condescending prat.
Hope she has a good supply of poo bags, kitchen roll and disinfectant if she’s going to give a rescue “ human” food. The dogs needs 3 days of total quiet, no fuss, minimum touching and plain dog food to allow it to decompress. If you’re going to adopt a rescue, at least know the basics.

Daily Mail readers are not renowned for their critical thinking skills. Evidenced by the fact they read the Daily Mail ffs.
Oblomov21 · 19/12/2021 14:24

She's been writing her column for over 20 years. I read her first few years. Was that back in 2000? Yes she's very self absorbed. It's just the person she is. No wonder not a single relationship survives, how could it?
