To wonder how you get back to the UK if you get coronavirus on holiday?

If you were abroad and catch covid, you need to have a negative test to return and a PCR within 2 days

But even if you quarantine for the full required days in the country you travelled to, you might not test negative for up to 60 days.

I can’t see anything on the gov website that proof of having had covid recently will exempt you from producing a negative test

Anyone know how you would get back into the uk?

I believe you are able to travel back on a recovery pass, then you get the positive pcr and will have to quarantine for 10 days (again).

strawberry12345 · 17/12/2021 19:27

Thank you - what is a recovery pass? Do you have a link where I could find out more?

I’m not in this position by the way just curious about what may happen if I travel abroad!

Would it not depend on the airline or country you're in as to what happens?

I don't know about the recovery pass but if it's thing then it could be a nightmare for airlines if they're swapping seats about so that people confirmed positive passangers and with people who tested positive.

We haven't really looked into holidays for a few years because all the changing about with different restrictions makes it too stressful for us and then the extra expense we can't really afford anyway.

HowRudeolfYou · 17/12/2021 19:43

This is on the government website about travel to England. If doesn't mention a recovery pass and says you just not travel and follow the local rules and contact embassy if you need help.

Yes I can’t see anything to indicate the UK accepts a certified recovery document?

Depends in the airline. Emirates only takes a PCR. I know someone who’s been stuck in Dubai for weeks - 10 days ina quarantine hotel and is now paying a fortune for a hotel room.

Kazziek · 17/12/2021 20:26

I was told by my airline that they would accept the nhs recovery letter on the app

Kazziek · 17/12/2021 20:27

That is though once you have completed your isolation and recovered from any illness!

TheCanyon · 17/12/2021 20:29

@AgentProvocateur why's that? My in laws live in Dubai but the nephews are over here (Scotland) for uni. Oldest nephews gf tested positive while they were away home in october, she did her 10 days isolation and then could fly back here no problem.

AgentProvocateur · 17/12/2021 20:37

@TheCanyon she just can’t get a negative PCR test. I guess it lingers longer in some people.

TheCanyon · 17/12/2021 20:47

@AgentProvocateur nephews gf didn't have to provide a negative pcr. I'll ask her what she did. Also youngest nephews gfs dad's a pilot for emirates so will ask her too.

BirdyBirdyTweetTweet · 17/12/2021 21:08

Don't test 🤷‍♀️

Palavah · 17/12/2021 21:11

You'd log your positive test in the NHS app. I have my positive PCR in my Covid pass with a QR, alongside the QRs for each vaccine.
I don't know how it works with a non - NHS test.

AutumnIsHere21 · 17/12/2021 21:31

Could you ask someone you’re travelling with to take a PCR for you if you know you’ve done your 10 days isolation and are symptom free?!

dons hard hat and runs away

It works the same. My dad did a travel pcr and his negative result is in his vaccine status app.

But regardless or airline or what is in your nhs app the gov.uk site is very clear about needing a negative lateral flow?

I don’t know if it is the right answer, but I am assuming I can’t travel if I have covid.

You still need a negative test. Think when we travelled back in October I read the government advice was to use LFT after you had covid (and did your SI etc) as they show negative quicker than PCR Sorry don't have a link for that but don't think you can travel back into UK without negative covid test currently.
strawberry12345 · 18/12/2021 08:57

@MrsBillyNoJagNoMates thanks that’s interesting. At least it is a lateral flow that is needed not PCR.

@Aprilx I wouldn’t travel with covid I’m wondering about how you would get home after recovering from covid

Someone can continue to test positive after recovery / 10 day isolation so then are you just meant to indefinitely stay abroad? Confused

Thee are too many variables to give a definitive answer.

As others have said it depends on the country you are in and the airline you are flying with, as well as the rules for entering the UK….if all else fails as has been mentioned if overseas contact the UK Embassy/Consulate.

strawberry12345 · 18/12/2021 09:24

@VladmirsPoutine I guess you just stay there until you get a negative lateral flow test. Which seems to appear much more quickly than a PCR which can test positive for months

RiledUpRiley · 30/12/2021 19:54

@Palavah How do you get a QR for the positive PCR? I don't see anything in the NHS app. It mentions in my covid record that I tested positive on a certain date but it's not on any type of actual pass with a QR let alone my name or other info. It's been more than 14 days since the test.
