To think BJ will be gone by the end of the year?

Lib Dems have turned North Shropshire yellow, over- turning a Conservative majority of 23 000. Never been anything but blue.
I think this will cause huge ructions. Can't see how he'll hang on now.

Wishful thinking. The only thing he’s done well at is lying and cheating. But we knew that before he got the job.

AvocadoAndToast · 17/12/2021 05:21

I don’t think he will be gone that soon but surely he can’t hold on much longer. Who knows though - a day is a long time in politics!
The problem is, who is going to replace him? Some even worse people are lining up like Priti Patel Shock. Not a good outcome for any of us.

actiongirl1978 · 17/12/2021 05:21

I think letters to the 1922 committee will be going in thick and fast in the next few days

Hodl · 17/12/2021 05:26

I think the knives will be out for Boris now. The Tories are ruthless when it comes to removing leaders who they see as an electoral liability.

Wonder who'll take over? Hazard a guess at Gove or Rishi.

MrsIPFreely · 17/12/2021 05:29

Please not Gove. I think I loathe him even more than Johnson. At least Johnson doesn't hide the fact he is an idiot.

We live in hope!
If it starts to look as though BJ is (at long last!) being seen in his true colours by his previously adoring fans - and would therefore be likely to lose the Conservatives votes in a general election - then yes, the knives will be out. I doubt it will be by the end of the year though, as there's only a couple of of weeks left. To oust the leader and elect a replacement would take a couple of months at least.

dementedma · 17/12/2021 05:30

I think it will be Gove to take over. To soon for Sunak and Patel is poisonous.

80sMum · 17/12/2021 05:31

I think Jeremy Hunt is the most likely replacement.

Ifailed · 17/12/2021 05:35

Who would want to take over in the New Year? Stringent new rules on import/export come into place in January due to Brexit, Covid is still rampant, inflation is rising.
They'll leave him at the helm 'til things calm down, unless he walks himself (unlikely)

EmmaGrundyForPM · 17/12/2021 05:37

I actually hope he doesn't go.

When Thatcher resigned, I was jubilant but my then-boyfriend said we were wrong to celebrate because it now meant the Tories would win the next GE. And he was right.

I think the same thing applies here. I loathe Johnson and his complete disregard for the truth, but I think if the Tories have a new leader, the country will vote for them again in 2 years time.

CheshireSplat · 17/12/2021 05:38

If Johnson hadn't interfered, Owen Paterson wouldn't have resigned and his 30 day suspension would be over.
A little like spending £2.6m on a briefing room, the only tangible thing that seems to have come out of it was evidence of law breaking.

Self-inflicted wounds and an apparently unwhippable 2019 intake.

If he loses his job as PM I wonder if he will step down as a MP? I can't see him wanting to be a back bencher with no change of advancement.

zoemum2006 · 17/12/2021 05:47

Not 2021 but definitely by the end of 2022.

He’s become a liability and the Tories are ruthless about that.

urbanbuddha · 17/12/2021 05:49

Yes, I think that's the problem.
As to who will replace him - atm Liz Truss fancies her chances, Jeremy Hunt apparently protests that he doesn't want it, Sunak obviously does but is even more far removed from voters than Johnson, and I think even the Tories can see that Gove is not a vote catcher.

the80sweregreat · 17/12/2021 05:51

Let him carry on to mop up the mess made to the economy by covid and the new rules made by brexit in the new year ! Pile it on, don't let him walk away scott free or just leave it to someone else to clear up. Let him have a few more months yet of misery.
Plus let the old ' red wall ' voters see what he is really like , if they haven't already of course !
They wanted him to ' get brexit done' , once they realize it's not what they expected some might have 'voters regret. '
Still, the tories are ruthless , so him and the spare rolls of expensive wallpaper might be gone soon. They don't like losing.

the80sweregreat · 17/12/2021 08:58

Yes, same thing happened with Mrs Thatcher, she resigned , they brought in John Major and he won the election.
The conservatives may have voted against their candidate in north Shropshire, but it is but a protest vote and people will revert to type once they get a new leader in.
