Midwife baby’s 14 day check at 28 days?

user14943608381 · 14/12/2021 17:32

Posting for traffic, posted a few days about 5 day check as my local CMW is really stretched.

Today is day 14 and my appointment was a no show, called CMW office and they said they’ll come out but it will be closer to 28 days? This is my second baby but I can’t remember what the 14 day appointment is for except discharge and seeing if baby is back at birth weight?

HV came day 10 and baby was 50g over birth weight so that’s all good. I do have some tongue tie concerns but tbh the midwife wouldn’t be able to answer them anyway. Do I need to insist someone comes out sooner? Im thinking if it’s just a weight check and discharge, I can wait?

Yabu- get someone out sooner
Yanbu- it can wait til the new year

YANBU but do call them if you have any concern. You can also sometimes see the HV at baby groups and they do weigh ins.

I was thinking about that but how necessary is it to get baby weight again this week when he was weighed Friday, especially as he was over his birth weight then?

I don’t want to drop the ball just in case it’s actually super important and they do other stuff as part of the check, i just can’t remember

The midwife needs to discharge you both by day 28. If all is well, unfortunately you will be slotted in when she has time. It’s not ideal but obviously if you do have any concerns you can still contact her because you haven’t yet been discharged.

Glad things are going well for you.

DeepaBeesKit · 14/12/2021 17:43

I don't think I had a 14 day check with my midwife, just 5 & 10.

MatildaTheCat · 14/12/2021 17:44

The main thing she’ll discuss other than the usual mother and baby checks are contraception, hv visits and to contact GP if any worries. You haven’t missed anything really.

Day 14 is a weight check and discharge if everythings ok. Ds was not discharged until day 28 because he was still jaundice and they wanted to keep an eye on his levels. We saw midwife at day 5, day 14, day 21 and Day 28 but she never come to us we went to the hospital to see her. Not had a midwife visit us at home this time round.
Only the health visitor has been out and she come on day 10

I didn’t have a single check when I had my first baby. That was in the first lockdown. Not a single person checked me. That’s really bad isn’t it? I tried several times to speak to HV but they’d been furloughed. Sorry, this doesn’t help at all. I’m just reflecting on pisspoor Covid postnatal care.

user14943608381 · 14/12/2021 17:55

Ah that’s ok then. I have a little concern about me but I’ll go to the GP for that.

Would we say it’s worthwhile calling hv to weigh baby in the interim or just leave it until day 28/ 6 week HV visit which are bound to be at roughly the same time as 28 days will be over x mas?

Christ that’s poor @Snowmanuel! I can’t believe the HV were furloughed!! What a ridiculous decision

Press on the tounge tie concerns! It took me 9 weeks of battling to get ds tounge tie cut that we were told was a slight tounge tie which when we went to get it cut was told it was a 60% tounge tie! Keep ringing the health visitor/doctors/midwife untill someone listens! It took my health visitor to be on anual leave so we saw a diffrent health visitor who i cried to about the whole situation and reffered us straight away!

Dreadful isn’t it? I’m lucky I had support (I developed suicidal thoughts and antenatal depression and they were fairly certain I was going to get PND) but so many woman wouldn’t have done. I didn’t develop PND by some insane stroke of luck but I still needed support which failed to materialise.
soughsigh · 14/12/2021 18:10

Have you had the heel prick test done? I think that's at an earlier appointment but that's the only important thing the midwife does, other than check you and baby are OK.

user14943608381 · 14/12/2021 18:11

@Mummmaa we had it divided on day 3 but I’m not sure if it’s reattached, I’m ultra focused on it as DD had a nightmare with hers bless her. I contacted the practitioner who did baby’s division and she said allow 4 weeks to heal and settle so I’m a little stuck. He doesn’t drain the breast well but is settled, maybe I have an over supply? I don’t know I’m ultra paro about it lol.

@Snowmanuel fuuuuuccck that’s dire. I’m glad you had support to get you through, hugs Flowers

We had our 14 day check up last week. Was a CMW from another town and think she didn't want to be visiting us in the sticks, it felt rushed unlike the last two home visits. It was just baby weight, if her cord had fell off and how were my stitches and she would of discharged us, had the cord fallen off.

Skinnyankles · 14/12/2021 19:17

Midwives will weigh on day 3 if breastfeeding, and all babies on day 7 (also with heelprick blood test.

HV will weigh in day 10 and then just go along to baby weighing clinics (if they are still running with covid)

You get a discharge visit between day 14 to day 28.

Sounds normal to me.

In my area, you used to get a visit day 3 and then 5 these are both MW, then HV day 10, the MW day 14 to see if baby is back at birth weight.

I asked at my 40 week app the situation for now and it’s a call the day after discharge, then a visit day 5 and a visit day 14 from MW and HV coming out day 10 and then 6 weeks like before
