Birthday/ gifts men buy the women in their life

This is for fun.

My husband is notoriously bad at buying me gifts. For my birthday I received jars for washing power and fabric softener and some gym clothes 2 sizes too big.

In fairness I like both gifts, but the message I could interpret from him isn’t flattering 😂 (I haven’t taken it this way)

A good friend of mine received an iron for Xmas last year…

Aibu to ask, what gifts do you get that make you chuckle? Are your partners any good at gifting?

For my 30th, my then H transferred me the money for a whiteboard I'd bought for the hallway. He then stuck a bow on it.

Could have been worse, could have been a Daily Fail subscription.

My ex husband was horrendous, used to chuck me £100 with a patronising 'buy yourself something nice' comment. However current husband is great at gift buying. Listens to hints or comments I make throughout the year and makes note of them, and I get lovely thoughtful gifts for birthdays and Christmas.

Sunsetsupernova · 14/12/2021 11:25

I have to be really careful mentioning things I’d like around DP when it’s coming up to Christmas or birthdays. He’s a very attentive listener and I’ll end up with whatever it is under the tree. Like the year I mentioned I might buy myself an electric tooth brush on Black Friday but then didn’t......guess what my present from him was

hilariousnamehere · 14/12/2021 11:27

Both my exes had annoying habits of buying themselves whatever they fancied on a whim in the few weeks immediately before their birthdays or Christmas - it drove me bonkers! Gift wise I was usually fairly specific about what I wanted, and one of them reluctantly got me a 'boring' bit of photography kit that, well over 15 years later, I still use regularly 😂

DH is generally great at gifts but it’s after years of training Grin. There were a few fails at the beginning!

loveablequalities · 14/12/2021 11:44

Dh has really good taste and always buys me nice things. He comes from an artistic family and makes beautiful things himself so I think that really helps. He's also a really thoughtful person. I'm bloody lucky compared with the utterly selfish buggers folk on here are hitched to. I'm shocked by the number of "no birthday acknowledgement" threads there are on Mumsnet.

For my 40th one of my gifts was an excercise book with a bike on it ( as we went on a cycling holiday). Fortunately for him he did get me some fabulous earrings but i was Hmm.

Spanglybangles · 14/12/2021 11:59

My OH is rubbish at gifts and literally goes to the cash machine on Christmas morning, comes home and hands me money to buy myself something. I’m used to it now, so usually but myself what I want, wrap it and put under the tree, he is just reimbursing me.

However, DD is into her teens now and is beginning to assist him with it, making suggestions and doing the online purchasing for him as he hates going to the shops and is distrustful of buying online Hmm. So last year, while not inventive, the little Chanel bag with my favourite perfume was a welcome change from the norm.

This year I have sent DD links to things I would like, so she can liaise with him and I hopefully get something I want. I’m a very thoughtful gift giver, but I accept it’s just not his thing.

BadLad · 14/12/2021 12:17

About half of the presents I give my wife at Christmas are things she asks for.

A quarter are things I've noticed she needs or could do with but hasn't bought herself. Her camera is quite old and battered, so I'm replacing that, for example.

The remainder are things I see and think she might like.

Inmypjsagain · 14/12/2021 12:27

My husband is great at gifts! But then we always do big Christmas gifts, tbh he pretty much always get me a designer bag or some form of nice jewellery which he knows will go down well.

He did once get me a mini fridge which I was bit 🤨 about but apparently he thought it would be good for my skincare, so I appreciated the thought. I’m not sure what I’d say if he bought me a white board 😊

Merryoldgoat · 14/12/2021 12:35

None of that would make me chuckle.

My DH gets it wrong sometimes but isn’t thoughtless.

The idea someone you live with doesn’t know you well enough to pick some stuff you like is yet more nonsense women put up with.

galacticpixels · 14/12/2021 13:01

Yes, he's good at gifting. I would find so strange if he didn't know me well enough to pick out some gifts for me. He always gets me lovely presents... Generally things related to my hobbies (such as gaming, reading, hiking). Last year he got me Airpods which I've used every day since so they were a great gift.

BashfulClam · 14/12/2021 14:12

My DH listens when I say I like something and usually buys me things based on what I’ve said. My dad used to give my mum a box of cheap chocolate but hide some jewellery inside it.

Bookworm20 · 14/12/2021 14:47

Mine is pretty good. But it has taken a little bit of work. Following one present I have stated that he is not to buy me any kind of domestic or kitchen appliance (unless especially asked for!) And by asking for does not mean I mutter to myself one day that I might consider getting a blender.
Since I pointed out that gifts should be thoughtful and generally if he thinks along the lines of something I would LIKE and not something I NEED. Its been alot better.

Mossstitch · 14/12/2021 15:12

My ex bought me one box of dairy box cheap chocolates in 30 years of marriage......... I know, I know he shouldn't have lasted 30 years🤦 I didn't want my kids to have divorced parents like I did so they were all over 18 before we split but I now realise that wasn't right either, none of them have a relationship with him anyway but will all be with me for xmas and I will spoil them with presents🎄🎁🎁🎁😍
