Misfuel - how much will this cost?

Oh put diesel in our petrol car and drove a while until it broke down. He is getting help to push it to a nearby garage. I could cry - so close to Christmas. How much for this to be fixed do you know?

About £300 when I did it
Thanks

Claphands · 13/12/2021 20:19

I did this recently when I was very stressed, luckily I didn’t drive it and it cost me £50 plus fuel whereas the AA quoted £200+ and I’m a member!

Lilyargin · 13/12/2021 20:22

When I did this some months ago (but the other way round, petrol in a diesel car) it cost me £200.
It only happened because I had bloody radio 4 on and they were going on and on about petrol so I just filled up with it like a zombie.
Very painful. As the bloke who came to sort it out said "you only do this once".
Yours might be less, mine was an emergency call out place. They siphon out the misfuelled stuff and put £20 of the correct fuel in, that they no doubt siphoned out of some other misfueller's car!

Sideswiped · 13/12/2021 20:26

IME, petrol in a diesel car is more expensive than diesel in a petrol car, because you will need the fuel filters to be changed.
As @Lilyargin said, you need not ever do it once though! (And then repeatedly mutter the right type of fuel to yourself when filling up for several weeks after.) Confused

Sideswiped · 13/12/2021 20:28

I haven't said how much it cost me because it was several years ago, so wouldn't be helpful.

StillFestive · 13/12/2021 20:30

It was between £200-300 when DH did this a few years ago. The car was a few weeks old. He hasn’t done it again though!

@Sideswiped "And then repeatedly mutter the right type of fuel to yourself when filling up for several weeks after"

Yes! 😂

LotusCheesecake · 13/12/2021 20:30

If it's any consolation I think it's meant to be worse to put petrol in a diesel car. Normally the pumps stop you being able to get diesel into a petrol car though as they are too big!

KenAddams · 13/12/2021 20:57

I was about 300 when I done and did the same drove it till it conked out... Tbh th car wasn't the same and would stall itself intermittently when slowing down.... Hopefully all will be fine tho and as PP sais he will never do it again 😂

Sideswiped · 13/12/2021 21:04

@Lilyargin, I still check now... Confused

Lilyargin · 13/12/2021 21:05

@Sideswiped same!

jetadore · 14/12/2021 07:55

It’s Definitely worse to put petrol in a diesel, if you drive it to breakdown, will severely damage many parts of your engine. Diesel in petrol is not so bad mainly just requires flushing the fuel system.

DorothyZbornakIsAQueen · 14/12/2021 07:59

Dh has done this. Think it was around £300

SpeedRunParent · 14/12/2021 17:10

We are in a south east and the company charged £450 ( the idiot DH hadn't just misfuelled but had driven the vehicle a few miles until it broke down).
They did respond very quickly though
