Will my name be mud at school?

My DD is very lucky to be taking part in Young Voices in January. I've had to buy the expensive concert tickets for myself and her brother to go and watch alongside it being Christmas. School said they would put on a coach and asked who was interested. I put our names down. They have come back with a price for the coach and said it needs to be paid now. The cost is 4 times what it would cost to take the train and I simply don't have the money especially not now. (As an aside I hate the way you are always expected to pay everything for school instantly without a chance to save up). I had no idea it would be so expensive. So I've said we will be getting the train. I know this will mess up the numbers for the coach but hopefully not too much as only 2 of us? Will they be annoyed at me?

Not at all and if they are duck it

icklekid · 13/12/2021 19:58

They will either have to put up cost to others which is unlikely or make a loss… if lots of others do the same they just won’t offer it as an option in future 🤷‍♀️

WhatAShilohPitt · 13/12/2021 20:00

I’d actually get in touch with them and explain that the cost is more than you can afford as they may be actually able to help subsidise it a little bit. I wouldn’t be embarrassed OP, I think they need to be told.

Bunce1 · 13/12/2021 20:00

Reply-

I am afraid that the cost is far more than I had expected and not something I can afford especially now. Sorry we will have to cancel our places. See you there!

emmathedilemma · 13/12/2021 20:02

I’d tell them why, it would be better for everyone to get the train!

DingADingADingDong · 13/12/2021 20:03

Not all all. Hope you all enjoy the concert

Palavah · 13/12/2021 20:05

Umless they can subsidise then it will already be cheaper for everyone to get the train, which they will be free to do, as are you.

SandysMam · 13/12/2021 20:07

I can’t believe this event is taking place. It seems like a complete recipe for a superspreader. Grannies and Grandads watching hundreds of kids singing out Covid particles in January?? What could go wrong!!
Meanwhile, just explain it’s 4 times cheaper to get the train, no one will mind.

WhoopsWhatsMyNameAgain · 13/12/2021 20:09

Of course not! I'd expect those who see your response (admin or teacher) will also have budgets to keep to at times. We all have to say no sometimes.

Who would pay 4x the price of a train?! That's crazy!

UndertheCedartree · 13/12/2021 20:11

Ok, thanks all. I have emailed and explained why we need to pull out of the coach. I have apologised for messing up the numbers.

Good for you, you did the right thing.

In all honesty I don't even understand why they are offering it as an option. The train is quick and easy and so much cheaper. I was under the (misguided) impression the coach would be cheaper as it will take longer to get there.

They have reduced the numbers for each event am are spacing groups out a lot....plus making the kids eat lunch in their seats so they all stay in their groups.
UndertheCedartree · 13/12/2021 22:24

@Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin - that's good to hear. You have to have been vaccinated or have a negative LFT to be let in to watch too.

4x the price-wow, how much are they charging??

Divebar2021 · 13/12/2021 22:52

I think it’s costing us more than £70 when you take into account the cost of tickets and the T shirt that they “suggested” you buy.

CallmeHendricksGingleBells · 13/12/2021 22:54

I will be staggered if this event takes place.

Are you the OP?

Removing the T-shirt/tickets cost as you’d have those either way, what is the coach versus the train cost, just out of interest? I agree, you’re doing the right thing.

Divebar2021 · 13/12/2021 23:04

Are you the OP?

Nope. My DD is going to the event though… I was just trying to recall what it costs overall. It’s not cheap… and that’s before you factor in our costs to get to the venue too.

Ellieboolou33 · 13/12/2021 23:08

My daughter is also doing the young voices, our coach was £12.50 T-shirt pack was £12.00 and tickets £21.50 each, seems very reasonable to me.

The cow k is just for the children, for those miserable ones complaining about the event still going ahead 🙄 there is more to life than covid!

Ellieboolou33 · 13/12/2021 23:09

Coach is just for kids

AnotherOneWithNoGoodName · 13/12/2021 23:09

Yikes, what coach company are they using?! Train tickets are quite expensive, and coaches traditionally cheap. I would tell them you've already made other plans for travel.

DeepaBeesKit · 13/12/2021 23:10

If the coach was 4x cost of train I'm willing to bet either the school are making a fat turn on it, OR the coach company are insisting on loads of empty seats between groups such that the coach is barely a third full.

Tell someone that there's more to life than Covid when people are still dying from it or to those who have lost someone. Events like these certainly don't help. It's a recipe for disaster.
UndertheCedartree · 15/12/2021 11:39

@RainbowBriteUk - they've made the decision to postpone the concerts now to Spring/Summer 2022, which seems sensible.
