To ask for suggestions of genuinely Christmassy things to do near London?

We are about an hour north east of London. Today we thought it would be Christmassy to go with dcs 10 and 11 and go round the London Xmas markets. The reality was a crowded, wet day filled with queues and rain that felt anything but Christmassy.

Just after suggestions for Xmassy things to do that might be a bit less busy and commercial, if such a thing exists!

Christmas markets are invariably crap. I would get on a bus and go down Regent Street to see the lights, and then I would go to Fortnums to look at stuff, or Trafalgar Square to see the tree (even if it is a bit rubbish this year), and then I'd find somewhere nice for a hot chocolate. Maybe see if one of the central London churches is doing an early Carol concert - that would be Christmassy and not wet! All Souls at Langham Place is doing lots of free Carol concerts, so that might be fun, if you are that way inclined.
