Have you noticed the price of alcohol going up in the UK & NI?

Getting organised for coming home to Ireland from the US for Christmas. All groceries, and booze in particular, used to be cheaper just across the border in the North. Just looking at the prices has surprised me a little, as there's no saving to be made anymore.

Have you noticed the price of alcohol go up much?

The price of everything has gone up, quite noticeably

RJnomore1 · 09/12/2021 19:12

Baileys is the cheapest I’ve ever seen; a case of corona was £8.99 the other week and you can still get two bottles of spirits for £20. But wine definitely seems to be going up.

Still looks much cheaper then what we pay (ROI)... oh and NI is part of the UK, but not GB

Respectfully, I must point out that not everyone from NI would agree with your statement that it is part of the UK. Some do, and that's fine.

From what I see the prices in don't look cheaper at all, and euro prices in Tesco and Supervalu look very reasonable? Which does surprise me so maybe I'm missing something Grin

That surprises me. What are you looking at? I drink wine and haven't noticed huge price hikes in NI. My family are from the South and I've always found prices horrendous. But maybe ROI has come down and I just haven't been paying close attention to prices?

Do they do 25% off 6 in Tesco in the South? Because we've been stocking up on that!

Bought a litre of Baileys for £10 in Sainsburys 1/2 price plus Bombay Sapphire gin 1L reduced to £20. M&S had one of my favourite wines reduced from £9 to £6.

NI IS part of the UK. That's what 'UK' means: United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. If NI were not part of it, the State would be called Great Britain, not UK. NI was created as an entity specifically in order to be part of the UK. Otherwise it would not even exist as an entity or as a name. It would simply be six counties in Ireland.

There’s loads of great offers in supermarkets on branded spirits at the moment ( England)..... also on cases of larger..... not sure about wine as I don’t buy it

AbsentmindedWoman · 09/12/2021 22:48

Thanks folks, I'll have to dig in a bit closer to make sure I'm not walking past a good deal!

This sounds great, off to investigate...

Another totally predictable consequence of brexit sadly. As with all price rises we've seen of late.
