Was it a call girl?

I am In a hotel on a course and have just been woken up with a knock on the door ( it's 1am), so I shouted through the door "who is it" and the young girl said "hi is it Martin" so I opened the door and she realised I'm a woman in my fluffy pjs so quite clearly not a Martin, she just apologised and got on the phone to someone all I could hear her say was what was the room number as she had it wrong, she was dressed up like she was coming in from a night out which I though was strange seen as I'm at a service station hotel, so now I'm laid trying to get back to sleep and it just occurred to me ... was this woman a call girl? I can't think what else she would be doing?

Just seems odd that's all I couldn't work out why someone would knock on a hotel room asking for someone she didn't know so I thought I'd put it out there for others thoughts as I couldn't get back to sleep.

irritating - but if someone was kncking on my hotel room door at 1am asking for someone else, I think I'd have responded with "get lost" rather than open the door.
Why does it matter if she is a sex worker?

It's more common than you would think.Most services have overnight truck stops, and very often have lady "visitors"

If she really was a young girl, is there a safeguarding issue? I'm assuming it was a young woman.

Do you know for sure she didn't know him?

It might be a call girl. It might be that they hooked up earlier that night, and swapped numbers, and he decided to invite her to his hotel room. It might be a late night tinder hook up. It might be her boyfriend, who wasn't going to whatever event she was, and so he checked into the hotel while she headed straight out - probably less likely.

Maybe Martin is her husband or boyfriend and was back at the hotel earlier than her.

Maybe Martin is a work colleague and they’re having a Christmas after-party.

I don't think people have been as rude as you suggest. It's not rude to be confused as to why the op is asking people that can't possibly know the answer. In mean, sure she is 'allowed' to ask (nobody suggested otherwise). It's just a bit pointless.

Unless of course the 'young girl' or Martin happen to be on Mumsnet. Which is unlikely.
