Back story- few years back a neighbour started a business, in conversation I mentioned if they needed any help with books etc I could help. Fast forward 4 years and each year I am asked to do the self assessment for them... (never asked for payment nor never received payment) at first I have done it as its in my nauture to help people but this year I have been really unwell and off work. So basically not in a good place health wise and the person knows this.
Saw said people last week and was asked (on the spot) could I do it again this year, said yes without thinking! (My fault) next day was handed said paper work!
Politely said the house is a mess and I didn't want the paperwork getting lost so would take it later.

AIBU to think that to be expected to do it for free and on demand is Cheeky? And to say I can't do it?

YANBU to say no, but YABU to expect them to mind-read given you keep saying yes, and keep doing it for free… It’s only cheeky if you asked for payment at some point and they keep delaying.

Totally. Just tell them you’re not well, you’ve too much on and you can’t do it.

It's fine that you can't do it - but you should tell them quickly so they have time to find someone else if they need to. Can you recommend someone else - and tell them their fee?

Apologise for saying yes the other day, and let them know that you have a lot on your plate at the moment and will be unable to do them the favour this year. You need to break the cycle.

Can you make an inflated invoice and bring it round when you pick it up? They might find they suddenly don't want you to do it.
