Hi

I've travelled 1.5 hours to Loughborough on the premise of a Christmas market

Well in short the "Christmas market"
Was on a par with a normal market, nothing handmade or quirky

Arrived at a 9.5 accommodation at 2pm (Booking.com)
Was told "owners are away"

However due back imminently.

Was 7pm, ran shower...stone cold,
Waited for it to warm up 1/2 hour still stone cold

Called owners on 2 mobiles and landline all voicemail

Said property is 9 rooms and full

Knocked on private quarters twice across 45 mins ..... no answer,
In short it's like a ghost town here and now 11.30 at night.
Also WiFi not working!

I've stopped my card as £60 is unacceptable as I can't shower or watch anything other than basic TV

No one has returned my calls from hours ago....
AIBU to have stopped payment given that there's been no one here for 7+ hours and what if there were (god forbid, a fire or flood?)

Is it reasonable for a 9 bedroom B&B to be full and the owners be away!!

sounds grim - and unreasonable for there to be noone either there or in easy reach.
It's why although they're a bit soulless I usually look for travelodge or premier inn - fewer let downs than with B&Bs
Hope you slept well and find something nice to do tomorrow.

Who's locked up then OP if owners are away?
Is it DIY breakfast?
IMHO, Christmas markets are always a let down.
Hope you sleep well.

Well a mother and daughter let me in at 2pm saying " we've looked after the place, owners are due back soon".... Not a soul on site since Im guessing/hoping they'll appear at breakfast, and want paying...as such I'll say no amigo, no one on site, freezing shower and no WiFi and answer to calls = no full payment

What possessed you to travel 1.5 hours to Loughborough for a Christmas market? It's not exactly known for them

ThinWomansBrain · 05/12/2021 02:50

any sign/sound of the other residents if they're claiming to be full?

thickthighs73 · 05/12/2021 02:52

Doesn’t like you did proper research, what was trip advisor reviews like?

Pieminster · 05/12/2021 02:52

Birmingham has a decent Christmas market . Not helpful, I know.

Is this going to be like an episode of 4 in a Bed and you pay what you think it's worth?

KloppsTeeth · 05/12/2021 02:58

Sounds fair to me. Even if they had to go to a family emergency, the rest of it sounds shit anyway.

EnidFrighten · 05/12/2021 03:04

Mmm, maybe the owners are sick with covid?

You've got a room to stay in, I think you should pay something.

Yes two said they hadn't tried shower yet. One was having pizza, one was watching film when I knocked on, feeling a right tit!

I feel your pain OP. I used to have to travel to work and they would normally book me in at the Holiday Inn Express. Basic, but clean and with 2 lovely girls on reception 24 hours. I appreciated this as I often got back to the hotel after 1am.

However a couple of times they put me in this horrible UNMANNED b&b and I felt so unsafe as a single woman. It was fucking awful. I didn’t even see a member of staff, even the keys were in an envelope in the lobby. Would never do it again. YANBU!

Sorry this really made me laugh

Have you spoken to owners yet op? Do they know you're refusing full payment yet?

DentalWorries · 05/12/2021 04:02

We stayed somewhere similar on the Isle of Wight. One of the reviews said “nicer than any hotel I’ve ever stayed in”. I’m not sure which hotels this person had been choosing but they certainly weren’t on par with our expectations.

We were so baffled by all the amazing reviews when it was so grotty. The only thing we could assume was that because the owners were so over the top “nice” and in your face people felt bad telling the truth about the place.

Not seen hide nor hair, not returned my calls, like living in the twilight zone! I'll pay something...but not full whack

Some B&Bs are unmanned, so owner absence shouldn't be a problem. £60 is really cheap - expectations have to adjust accordingly. Hot water is a must, though. When there was no hot water in my room at Dun Laoghaire, the hotel refunded the full cost of my stay. I had to argue for it - they tried telling me that as I'd had hot water when I had stayed there two years previously, that should be enough!

When I meet the buggers I'll let you know, but short of being Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara they aren't getting full price!
