Maybe I’m strange in thinking if you need a safe word when having sex there’s something amiss if you can’t just say ‘stop’

By having a safe word, it guarantees a proper stop

I think the idea is that words like 'no' and 'stop' might be used as part of sexual role play (highly likely in BDSM), so you choose a random word that couldn't possibly be mistaken for part of the 'game'.

I’m guessing the OP doesn’t need it explained to her that some men people get off on hearing the word ‘stop’ or ‘no’.

In some sexual relationships no and stop aren't necessarily used as a way to revoke consent. Depending on how you enjoy sex, some enjoy the power struggle. A safe word ensures that if you are done, you are done and no confusion can be made when removing consent.

Red for hard stop, orange for pause, are the classic ones. The challenge comes in when you're so tied up you can't do "3 bangs" hand signals or say the words. Rapid blinking sometimes has to do it...
that's why you should only do proper D/s with someone you super trust.

If people are role playing saying ‘stop’ or ‘no’ might be part of that so they choose a word they know for certain won’t be misconstrued as part of the scenario. It’s not my cup of tea but equally not my business what others enjoy in the bedroom.
