Lancaster or brighton?

For a woman in her 30s moving alone with her cat!
Brighton: very good friends, warmer sea, more fun, livelier, but all family in north and expensive, closer to London and handy for getting away
Lancaster: very close family, much cheaper, less bullshitty, but no friends to start with, more isolated

No need to talk to me about schools etc as irrelevant to me! I work freelance in something creative. I'm really torn!

Vote:
YABU: Brighton
YANBU: Lancaster

@BrightonOrLancaster it’s been a long time since I dated in Lancaster but you may not be far wrong!

BringMeTea · 06/12/2021 18:56

Yeah I think I will change my vote to Brighton. If you're after eligible men Lancaster probably a small pond even allowing for the LGBness of Brighton. Mind you, you would probably be able to whoosh in as noticeable new blood in Lancaster sensible footwear and all... hmmm.

OldTinHat · 06/12/2021 18:57

Brighton.

Did you mention somewhere else? No? Thought not! 😁

@Ihopeyourcakeisshit

You can't use an umbrella in Lancaster, it gets blown to fuckery by the wind. You never get used to it. You have to wear anoraks and waterproof things rather than a nice wool coat.
Of course you can use an umbrella. You just have to invest in a good, windproof one. Have a look at Senz or Davek or even London Undercover. You know other areas get wind too? It's not unique to Lancaster. Smile

The one I was at was quite small, near a pub with something to do with shoes or boots in the name) and it was indeed nice.

That's the Boot and Shoe, near Hala, halfway between town and the university. Hala is a bit of a blot, but where else does one's bus trip to work give you spectacular views of the southern fells, from the top floor of the bus?

You have to wear anoraks and waterproof things rather than a nice wool coat.

I don't. I have a nice wool coat, cashmere scarves & a selection of useful peaked caps. I hate umbrellas and wear hats.

And I lived in the Midlands for 5 years and was always much colder than in Lancaster. Although I wish it would snow. But the rain is just drizzle. (However I went to school in the north east, in Co. Durham, so I guess Lancaster feels much warmer always).

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 08/12/2021 19:30

I couldn't give a shite a about the cold, it's the wet that's the issue, hence the waterproofs rather than cashmere. Hmm

Also as a single woman am I going to meet many eligible men there? Or will all the eligible men have fucked off to Liverpool or Manchester?

This might out me a bit, but my now wife was single and living in Lancaster when we met through a mutual connection to a place in the Yorkshire Dales. I was living in Manchester. On balance I think we'd have been happier moving in together in Lancaster (especially now Booths in Salford has been closed down!) but for career reasons we settled in Manchester.

I'm starting to think Liverpool could be a fucking good call for me. I also have close family in dublin so presumably could get a boat over (? I love flying but hate airports).

The only thing though is that I'm coming from abroad and coming from an intense relationship. I feel like I need a year surrounded by familiarty and people I love to recuperate. My feeling is do a year or two in brighton and then decamp to liverpool. I'm good at making new friends.

Liverpool is a great shout @BrightonOrLancaster!

It’s really got loads happening at the mo but it’s still v affordable with v down to earth but open-minded vibe.

And yes, you can get the ferry over to Ireland.

Makes sense about being round friends for now. I personally think Brighton is a clear winner for post break up recuperation over Lancaster! But great to have so many good options. :)
