To be concerned about gp prescribing me anti biotics

Green45 · 03/12/2021 09:10

I’ve had a recurring stomach issue throughout this year.

It’s got gradually worse each time it’s appeared.

I’ve had extensive blood tests carried out and had many scans, everything is coming back clear. Not a celiac.

I have reason to believe it’s an autoimmune disease.

Everytime I eat, I get muscle and joint pain and twitching . More recently I’ve had knee pain. It’s always triggered by eating.

I feel like every time I eat my body begins to attack itself.

My gp has prescribed me anti biotics for it because they believe it MAYBE h pylori causing it . But when I asked whether h pylori causes muscle and joint pain and pain in the head and twitching e said no.

The reason I questioned my gp is because he keeps on issuing me anti biotics for everything including infections I don’t have.

Example I was given anti biotics three times for a urine infection I didn’t have this year. One set of anti biotics triggered the pain when I eat. The second set - a gynaecologist who saw me told me not to take the antibiotics because there was nothing in my urine. My urine test that the gp took came back as clear.

A third set of anti biotics were taken off me when an out of hours gp realised I didn’t have a urine infection.

My gp won’t refer me to a specialty until I’ve taken the antibiotics

I feel like my gp has given me too many anti biotics this year. 5 sets and the issue has got worse.

Is there anyway I can override my gp to see a gut specialist?

The gps are generally really crap . They all just keep on prescribing anti biotics. All of them.

I’m losing weight rapidly. I can’t eat without feeling pain. Im tired

If you had a confirmed diagnosis of pylori then you’d be unreasonable not to take them. Ask for the referral and state that previously antibiotics have worsened your condition.

ChangeChingyChange · 03/12/2021 13:41

See another gp stop seeing this one. You could just take the prescription, not take the pills but say you have and they didn't work instead of keep arguing if that'll get you a referral. It's wrong but would be the easiest way.

Electricbug321 · 03/12/2021 13:54

See a different GP if that is an option. I’m surprised yours keeps giving you antibiotics, mine won’t give them out even when they are needed.

Skysblue · 03/12/2021 14:06

Can you move to a different GP? Or get a private consultation?

Yanbu to think some GPs don’t know how to do much except from prescribe antibiotics.

Other GPs - like mine - refuse antibiotics even when the patient is convinced they have an infection. It took 6 years and a private consultant to halt my (very painful) infection that antibiotics could have dealt with easily years before.

I had identical symtoms to you. It's small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. SIBO. Almost always misdiagnosed as IBS. The pain was so bad for me I was almost crying every meal. Completely shifted it in 1 week with a anti-SIBO/FODMAP diet of small meals spaced 3-4 hours apart, Saccharomyces Boulardii probiotics tablet with every meal (

Thank you for your responses.

I considered changing my GP. I actually wrote an email this morning directly to the gastroenterologist in the area at the hospital . If they don’t respond then I probably will switch.

I walked into the pharmacy today in desperation to pick up the anti biotics. When I realised that I had three different sets to take I walked out without paying for them simply because I don’t wish to take a further three sets on top of four sets I’ve taken this year.

@SIBOitsSIBO - someone said this to me a couple of months ago but I didn’t take it seriously. Simply because my symptoms were changing so rapidly. Can you tell me where to find the diet and where do I get those pro biotics from?

I doubt very much my gp will issue me Sibo antibiotics because he’s insisting on the h pylori.

May I ask if you had the muscle pain and joint pain? Almost like your body is being attacked by something? Hands , face, head , feet everywhere?

@SIBOitsSIBO which brand of probiotic did you purchase . Just looking on the web.

Antibiotics causes SIBO and let's them thrive. Yeah the pain was like my nervous system was under attack, like a burning ache all over depending on how bad it got, while I couldn't stop shaking with it. I've only just got it down to (almost) normal again and it's getting better every day. FODMAP diet and anti-SIBO diet combined was difficult to follow at first but combined with the anti-SIBO probiotics it was like a miracle. I started with the cheaper brand Swiss BioEnergetics as they were a next day delivery and I was desperate, while waiting for the more expensive Optibac to arrive. Can confirm both brands work equally well.

Do your research on FODMAPS and especially on what kinds of carbohydrates and sugars SIBO feeds on. There's a sibo home test kit you can buy too to confirm it, which I didn't need as the diet and probiotics nuked it into next Sunday and I'm confident it'll do that for you too. Sibo 'die off' may confuse you too so be sure to read about that as when they die they release gasses that mimic a bad flare upbeat, lasts 2-3 days. Best of luck, and if you have any more questions just ask as I wouldn't wish this condition on my worst enemy

SIBOitsSIBO · 04/12/2021 00:46

I got my probiotics from amazon as they delivered quickly

Green45 · 04/12/2021 08:37

@SIBOitsSIBO thank you . I think you’re right. I’ve been doing a lot of reading last night and went back to the sibo course the person who told me about it a few months ago originally gave to me.

The bloating and pain explains it all. Last night I was so uncomfortable and in pain. I took probiotics (I stopped taking them for a week) and then I got hiccups for an hour. With each hiccup I burped. This lasted for an hour until 80% of the wind escaped and my tummy went down. My stomach and abdomen is in pain this morning. I’m assuming it’s from the bloating and inflammation.

My question to you is which fodmap diet did you follow? They’re all the same but would love to follow one recommended by you . It seems like we were suffering from exactly the same thing.

I spoke to my partner last night and said I felt like this issue started when I was given a strong set of anti biotics. I feel like anti biotics strip the gut bacteria allowing other bacteria to thrive this causing an imbalance.

Please can I get your link to fodmap diet? I saw the optibac online and will order it. I’m currently taking dr formulated. How long have you been in your diet?

I have a course by ‘thesibodoctor’ give to me by the person who originally suggested I may have it and there is chance of relapse if not careful.

Are you in the UK? They seem never to want to prescribe antibiotics.

MaxNormal · 04/12/2021 19:37

@Green45 can you remember which antibiotics you've taken?

Green45 · 04/12/2021 20:00

In the U.K.

@MaxNormal I believe levofloxacin was the beginning of my issues.

Nitro of nifro something or the other for ‘urine infection’

Ciprofloxacin for ‘kidney infection ‘ I really didn’t have

Reacted badly to the fluoroquinolone antibiotics

OP posts:
MaxNormal · 04/12/2021 20:06

@Green45 please don't take any more fluoroquinolones, especially if you've already reacted badly.

Your GP is an utter clown prescribing those without an extremely good reason, especially since the changes to the guidelines in 2018 saying they shouldn't be used as first line treatment.

I think the SIBO suggestion is good particularly as its probiotics and a diet change rather than anything more risky. I really hope it helps you.
