Levothyroxine

So I randomly get these terrible bouts of indigestion, stomach pain, bloating.. they come on like an attack and can last a month or so at a time.
I haven't had one for so long and the past week have been having another attack. Wracking my mind to think what it could be, I've just checked my levothyroxine tablets and low and behold inside the box is a different brand tablet.
So I think it's these that are causing my discomfort and maybe the attacks in the past have been for the same reason but I didn't notice.
The brand they've given me now is mercurypharma.
Has anyone else had the same issue?
AIBU to assume the stomach problems are a result of the brand change?
I'm going to go to the pharmacy today to try and sort.

I think you should read the patient leaflet inside the box to understand the common side effects of levothyroxine. In theory different brands of generic medicine should be equivalent but sometimes people do report differences. Whether these are real or placebo isn’t always clear.

Speak to your pharmacist and also consider options other than blaming these pills so you don’t miss something.

I’ve been taking it for over 20 years with no reaction, I’m sure brands have switched over that time. I’d have a chat with your pharmacist.

When I was on levothyroxine I found the one brand that worked better for me (can’t remember which one it was now sorry)

Different brands can lead to different results and different side effects it’s finding the one that suits you and requesting that brand (this is known particularly with levothyroxine but a few other medications too)

I guess it could be if you are very sensitive to the ingredients - you could check what is in the new brand against what is in your normal brand. I’ve been on levothyroxine for almost 30 years and never reacted to different brands tho but everyone is different,

Have you ruled out food intolerance? And have you tried taking a course of probiotics? I’ve found those very helpful when my stomach has been misbehaving. Good luck. Xx
