Our laptop died its death and I was thinking of buying my 14 year old one for Xmas. Would need to do school work on it. The range is huge but I know I want q good one ie not a chrome book. Any recommendations?

Have a look on AO we got a Lenovo 11" with a years Office 365 for £147 down from £200 for our 14 yr old, it's a great spec tooSmile

We got a Chromebook quite by accident - bought in a rush for the whole home schooling thing - not realising that they seem to have a poor rep in terms of functionality! After hating the damned thing for over a year but being forced to use it (just never got round to getting something else) we've come to realise that actually it's perfect for what we need. V quick, light and reliable, there's not a single thing our 13 yr old/8 yr old haven't been able to do on it. Eldest left it outside in the summer and it hammered down with rain, after drying out for a couple of days its still working fine.

Ah, I've just started almost the same thread in chat, so following with interest. I have no idea what the right spec is....

We bought DD an Honor laptop when she started in Y7 and it’s been brilliant. I did a lot of research before buying and it came down to this and a Surface.

Thank you for your ideas will check them out. Lolled at the chromebook story and it sounds fab as my son can be heavy handed but we need Microsoft functionality and perhaps small video editing
