Don't get me wrong, I think he is a nice chap and his wife is an inspiration, (and this applies equally to other explorers), but how come he is celebrated for travelling around the world having adventures and selling it as "eco" stuff?
His carbon footprint must be astronomical.
I don't get it. Confused

OP posts:
ChooChooSan · 02/12/2021 15:51

Agreed.

mustlovegin · 02/12/2021 16:04

Same with Greta et all

WomanWomenGirlsFemale · 02/12/2021 16:08

I agree OP. There are already so many wildlife programmes telling us about the plight of wildlife and the planet in general I really don't think we need anymore. Also fed up of the presenters need to get as close as possible to the poor creature that's already been photographed a million times already. Steve Irwin was another one that used to really piss me off.

CovidPassQuestion · 02/12/2021 16:10

@mustlovegin

Same with Greta et all
To be fair to her she sailed to the US!
Thefartingsofaofdenmarkstreet · 02/12/2021 16:10

Well, you could say the same about David Attenborough or Leonardo DiCaprio, who must have some of the biggest carbon footprints of any human to ever be on this planet in its entire history!

Ukholidaysaregreat · 02/12/2021 16:23

Greta thunberg goes to extreme lengths to travel in a green and renewable way. She is always on the train and the bus. Very inspirational.

Sparklingbrook · 02/12/2021 16:25

Whenever there's a thread title with just a name I always think they've died. I take it he's ok other than crimes against the planet.

I assumed he'd been caught in a sex scandal!

I loved watching deadly 60 when my kids were small

Iamnotamermaid · 02/12/2021 16:34

Carbon footprint is not just flights from travelling though. It is everything you consume which requires energy of some form to create or run. I think the bigger picture gets lost. Carbon footprint includes food production, buildings (concrete has one of the biggest carbon dioxide emissions), fast fashion etc. An average sized dog is estimated to be the equivalent carbon footprint of 2 SUVs (including build-fuel-6000 miles per year). Power is required for charging mobiles, TVs, kindles, fitbits etc, it all counts.

Oil companies are just meeting an ever increasing demand for energy/power (not saying they are eco-friendly & they do contribute to the problem) and technology has not been able to keep up.

And then a crew had to fly out to America to bring the boat back. Hmm

Snoozer11 · 02/12/2021 16:37

One rule for the middle classes and another for everyone else.

I know a very plummy dickhead going around shouting about her eco credentials because her new taps use 30% less water. But she's taken 6 long haul flights this year.

Crankley · 02/12/2021 16:50

There's a bit missing on my post. Should read:

She sailed to America and then......

Riverlee · 02/12/2021 16:51

About to say the same, especially when he took his shirt off…!

(Sorry derailing thread)

Beaming and laughing and smiling and laughing and talking and laughing and fundraising and laughing and being Steve Backshall and laughing.

FaLaLaLaLaaaar · 02/12/2021 17:16

@Riverlee Oh yes!

Daftasabroom · 02/12/2021 18:16

Aviation is responsible for 2% of carbon emissions. 75% of emissions come from burning fossil fuels to heat and power our homes, businesses and transport. You need to get your facts right before you start throwing accusations.

Damnloginpopup · 02/12/2021 23:41

He tweeted a picture of me once. Which was wow, amazing , cool, according to my kids when I asked them who he was.

MsWalterMitty · 02/12/2021 23:50

He’s raising awareness, it’s got us talking, it gets us thinking. He inspires the younger generation.

I will have nothing negative said about Steve Backshall!!

I assumed it was “aibu for thinking he’s the sexiest of them all? his helmet is welcome in my damp cave anytime”

I was readying the vom emoji

Windyone · 02/12/2021 23:54

@Iamnotamermaid interesting! I think Greta has a couple of dogs…

Iamnotamermaid · 03/12/2021 08:36

@Windyone Yes I believe Greta does have two dog. Which is fine, no issues with that but then don't criticise people for having a (single) car.

Like everything furry organic beasties also have a carbon footprint like people. All this counts towards the energy use\pollution on planet Earth. But no one wants to jump on that bandwagon.

sashagabadon · 03/12/2021 08:44

Streaming has a massive carbon footprint too. Watching shows on Netflix even nature shows adds to our carbon footprint especially when these shows involve travelling all over the place filming.

MrsMadderRose · 03/12/2021 08:46

his helmet is welcome in my damp cave anytime

Eeeeeeeeeeeew :o

Appreciated many a Deadly 60 when the kids were little though.
