Im in love with Elf on a shelf

I love Elf on a shelf. There I said it!

I like to move him at night. I will put him in the fridge. I will put him in the cereal box. I already crawled into my sons room and put him on his bedside table looking at him when he woke up on the 1st. I emptied my husbands underwear draw and put elf in there (naughty elfGrin). I googled places to put elf.
Already I’ve seen some Elf hate on Mumsnet but I love the Elf tradition.

I’m in love with Eld on a shelf.Blush Am I being unreasonable?

Who else is doing Elf on a shelf this Christmas? Where do you put him?

If you have time then crack on.

desperate4spring · 02/12/2021 06:27

It takes literally 20 seconds to move an elf. I don't understand why people have so much hate for it either op!

maa32 · 02/12/2021 06:29

I didn't do it for my DS, I assumed he's too young, he's 2 but now I regret not doing it as I think he would've had some fun with it.

That said, I'm so busy I couldn't keep up with it. I might make him arrive and visit on a weekly basis

HerRoyalHappiness · 02/12/2021 06:32

YABU. He's creepy as fuck and his original purpose was to keep an eye on the kids and report back to santa... I dont need an elf to make my kids behave. But each to their own I guess.

TarasCrazyTiara · 02/12/2021 06:46

@desperate4spring

Ikr? I hear a lot of reasons which basically add up to it not being a thing when they were a kid so unnecessary or “commercial” (even though it’s actually pretty cheap). But that’s true of so much stuff we had that the previous generations didn’t have either.

@HerRoyalHappiness

Actually I still tease my oldest daughter at home with saying that and putting it in her room lol!😂

I think perhaps I was a sensitive child but to wake up and see a doll staring at me from beside my bed would have creeped me out!

That said I just have a baby but I’m looking forward to some games on Christmases to come. The elf could be fun.

myamie · 02/12/2021 06:51

YABU
So annoying especially the bored who post it all on social media.

Popcornriver · 02/12/2021 06:54

HerRoyalHappiness good for you. Doesn't sound like OP needs it to get her kids to behave either. It's providing a few smiles and laughs to their family. Probs cost a quid and will be brought out year after year. Why on earth would anybody think the OP is being unreasonable? Confused

The op has said they have emptied their oh's underwear drawer so that's a whole thing to clear up later x 24
HerRoyalHappiness · 02/12/2021 06:58

@Popcornriver I never said she did. I said it's original purpose was that.

Popcornriver · 02/12/2021 07:01

HerRoyalHappiness

Well thankfully of all the mumsnet elf posts I've never actually seen anyone who does that. I really don't understand why it's seen as such a negative thing.

HerRoyalHappiness · 02/12/2021 07:03

@Popcornriver yet I have seen people who do that. "Be good or the elf will tell santa" "don't forget, the elf is watching, he knows what you're doing" etc etc. There's just no need. Same with fake security cameras sold as santa cams.

Popcornriver · 02/12/2021 07:06

HerRoyalHappiness

Well I agree with you on that one for sure! Don't see the harm with it as a bit of fun though.

ThePlantsitter · 02/12/2021 07:13

I can't be arsed to do it. But I don't know why other people doing it is pressure to do it yourself- you crack on! Of course you're allowed to like stuff other people moan about! I think the elves are funny but I also have previous for starting traditions and then feeling enslaved by them so I don't bother, but I don't feel bad about it because others do. I posted on the thread you're probably talking about and then wished I hadn't because it was clearly just an opportunity to slag off other people for 'showing off' rather than actually someone feeling bad. People talking about what they're doing is not always showing off and if you enjoy something you should definitely do it.

@myamie

I’m doing 25 days of Elf on Facebook!🤷🏼‍♀️

Each to their own l just hate my fb wall being clogged up with pics of elves so have unfollowed everyone doing it this year.

RedHot22 · 02/12/2021 07:50

What is ‘Elf on the Shelf’?
I’ve only ever heard of it on MN.

Will my DCs end up in therapy as I failed to do it?

RicherThanYew · 02/12/2021 07:52

I don't use our team of festive bastards to control the behaviour of my child (that does strike me as really fucking strange) but we do have an elf and he gets up to all sorts. We have 4 elves ... but one child. This year Santa sent him a vet called Keith Hmm he painted "jingle balls" on my husbands feet last night and my son loves the dolls, it's worth the 3 minutes that it takes every day to move them.

You posted a photo on you facebook of the elf in your DHs underwear? Confused

I think some children really enjoy the elf and the build up to Christmas, but I don't see why you would share them with everyone you know.

SummerHouse · 02/12/2021 07:53

LTB

TheKeatingFive · 02/12/2021 07:54

Neither do I. So we don't do that bit. Our elf doesn't do surveillance.

Mucky1 · 02/12/2021 07:57

Give it 10yrs or so the novelty will soon wear off 😂 when you jolt awake at 2am because you've forgotten it so you're blearily eyed wrapping loo roll around the tree or writing whoops I peed in frozen peas on the work top (those things roll).
My advise don't go to big they'll always expect it 👌🏻
