DS had a molar out a few months back, September I think.
The tooth cracked while the dentist was pulling it out and the roots got left in.
They sent DS on his way with antibiotics and said he would hear from the hospital about taking the roots out in a few months.
This weekend DS has been in alot of pain on and off with throbbing where the roots are. You can now see bits of root poking out.
He rang the emergency dentist yesterday but they couldn't help.
Does it sound like an absess? He will phone his dentist who took the tooth out tomorrow but just wonder if anyone can suggest what he can do until they can see him?
TIA

Could be an abscess forming.
Waiting lists are still enormous for oral surgery, you could maybe look into having the roots extracted privately?

Take painkillers and use warm salty water as a mouth rinse. Other than that, all you can do is see a dentist ASAP.

Maybe it's working itself out, don't know if that's possible but I remember many years ago having a surgical removal of a broken tooth and the dentist saying to not worry if sharp bits worked their way out. They did, like little splinters but I don't remember being in pain with it, just sore and a bit irritating like when a wisdom tooth is growing.

Thank you
He rang the dentist today, his dentist is on annual leave so he can't see anyone until next friday😳
He hasn't had any pain today but it can come on suddenly.
It does sound like the roots may be working themselves out, at first, you couldn't see anything but now sharp bits are poking through

It is possible for pieces of remaining tooth to work their way to the gum and you can usually just grab them with tweezers and get them out. If it's a whole root, that's less likely to happen, but it's obviously nearer the gum line now, so may be easier to extract.

I had a tooth out a few months ago. Was told if it broke which was highly likely any bits left could either be drilled/pulled out at the time of extraction or if small enough the body would reject and work them out

Well I've removed 3 tiny shards of tooth each felt like a razor blade on tongue

Paramol is great for oral pain

Thanks all! I'm sure he will try and pull them out if it starts hurting again
