Best shopping near Ilford

Help please! I've got one unexpected day in Ilford and will have a whole afternoon / evening to shop! I don't know the area at all, I just wondered where anyone would recommend going shopping - ideally independent shops so I can buy some nice gifts for people, not fussed about high street shops as have them all where I live. Any recommendations please? I can go to any surrounding areas. Thanks very much in advance!

Personally I would leave ilford and head to London. Nearest shopping centre is Westfield Stratford but you will only get the Normal high street shops. Romford the other direction is the same but less choice and outside.

Most people would see being in ilford for a whole afternoon and evening a bad thing.

Haha, are there no nice independent high streets nearby?! I don't really want to go into London as I have ASD and its too stressful....

Would Stratford maybe be the best nearest place then?!

Yeah, you’ll find nothing like that in ilford!!

Cantfindthatgrip · 28/11/2021 18:59

Thanks, that's why I'm asking what is nearby!

I’m originally from around those parts, not really anything with indie type shops. Wanstead has a nice high street but depends on how you are travelling around, in a car not too far but no direct train link, Westfield is just your normal large shopping centre l

The closest place I can think of with independent shops is Victoria Park Village and around. There’s Sublime (women’s clothes/gifts) and SNAP on Roman Road (for kids). You can get the 425 bus from Ilford I think. Or you could get the train to Liverpool St and go to Spitalfields Market / Box Park and around there. Or go into central London

SpiderBrooch · 28/11/2021 19:20

Sorry forgot you don’t want to go into central London so ignore that bit!

I as going to say Stratford or Romford, as other posters have mentioned. There are independent shops outside of Westfield, in the old shopping centre, but they are similar to the type of shops you would get in Ilford, so not worth a specific journey.

Romford is mostly high street shops but has more choice than Ilford & some nice independent cafes. I can't really think of many independent gift shop type places (there are small businesses but more things like food stores/stalls on the market, hairdressers, not really gift shops).

For independent shops, getting the train to Brentwood or Billericay would probably be your best bet. The high streets there both have more independent shops.

AwkwardPaws27 · 28/11/2021 19:35

Thinking about it again, there's a couple of home & gift shops in The Liberty (Romford), not really my cup of tea so I tend to just walk past them but might be suitable?
This one for example - www.heavenathome.co.uk/

How about a bus to Green Street - plenty of independent shops there - and places to eat.
Can then go on to Westfield later on when it gets dark or too cold ready for the train back to Ilford

Thanks very much everyone, great suggestions! Now I can make a plan. Thanks again 😊

It is a difficult ask in Ilford. Brentwood is not too far and has a few (but limited) independent shops. Leytonstone also has a few on the high street.
