To ask for firm mattress recommendations

DH has back problems and is looking at buying a firm mattress. We just bought a ikea Hyllestad for DS’s room and we really like it.

Are there any other (reasonably priced) mattresses with similar firmness available in the market?

How do Simba/Emma/Casper compare in firmness?

We have the Hyllestad too. Why not get the same for your room?

User112 · 27/11/2021 14:43

Just wondering if there are other mattresses that support bad backs better. We definitely want something firm, at least as firm as Hyllestad.

Did you have yours delivered? Did they bring it upstairs for you?

Sleep Soul.
They have memory foam topper so not suitable for sweaty sleepers.
The mattress is firm but it adjusts to body shape after a few minutes so supports where it should and gives way where it should.
10 out of 10 for comfort.
The relief when I go to bed and relax my body is great. No more broken night’s sleep or getting up with stiff neck/shoulders

Yes, we had it delivered. They brought it upstairs.

We had the Firm first but it was a bit too firm for me so we used the 90 day guarantee and they took it away and exchanged it for the Medium Firm.

DH says he preferred the Firm. However, I do wake up with back pain some times (once a month), not sure if it’s because DH is heavier ehich means there is a very slight dip.

Gosh this is so weird (considering how many mattress makes and models there are out there) we're having an IKEA Hyllestad delivered on Monday!

Medium firm, king size, delivery.

It's our first new mattress for 13 years. Old one is knackered. We are both having back problems and are hoping this will help.

I spent a lot of last week scouring old MN threads about mattresses and this is the one i chose. We wanted to stay in the 2 to 4 hundred £ price range.

Along the way i saw lots of chat about comfy mattresses which were 1.5k plus Shock Well ..... christ for that money i'd expect it to feel like actual heaven not just 'comfy'!!

Laiste · 27/11/2021 16:48

@tallduckandhandsome they took it upstairs for you. Did you have to pay the £50 delivery to get that?

We've just paid the basic £40 delivery. We are fully expecting them to only help as far as into the hall. Upstairs would be fab!

We have both a single and double of the IKEA Hafslo (we have the firm, also comes in medium/firm). We've had them four years now with no issues.

Sorry if this is telling you what you already know, but how firm you need your mattress depends a lot on bodyweight. I rented furnished homes (houseshares) for years, which meant lots of cheap old beds. That led me to believe that I wanted a firm mattress because I always had back pain. Bought the same IKEA mattress you mention and it was worse. Added a soft latex mattress topper and it was great. I didn't realise until then, that the mattresses that I thought were bad weren't unsupportive because they were too soft, they were just old. The mattress needs to have enough give when you lie on it to support you. If a mattress is too firm for your weight then you don't sink into it and it doesn't support evenly.

Ikea foam firm one. 169 quid I think. Will never go back to pocket sprung now!

Mumofone2021 · 27/11/2021 17:32

We have a firm dormeo octaspring and it’s superb. Felt a bit firm to start with but is absolutely lovely now. Was expensive but definitely worth it.
