To wonder if I can fit a king mattress into a car

We bought a new mattress. I don’t want to spend £60 disposing the mattress (unless I have to). My cousin has an estate car and he kindly offered a trip to the tip if I can find a way to fit the mattress into it.

Has anyone managed to fold a mattress into a car??

It will depend on the mattress eg a thinning cheap foam mattress could be folded a bit/squished into place. A more solid mattress with metal springs etc would be much harder to squash in, you’d prob need to cut it into smaller parts.

Check your tip will actually take a mattress -- ours won't.

Nanny0gg · 27/11/2021 12:05

If you can fold it, no problem

Ifailed · 27/11/2021 12:06

It can be done, you need at least two people and some ratchet straps.
Put down the straps fully extended about a metre apart, put mattress on top and fold it over, someone needs to sit/lie on it to keep it on place while the other tightens up the straps.

Depends on the car and the mattress.
Our mattress is really thick and won’t fold. Ds’s is memory foam and would fold easily.

I did this last weekend
Got belts and linked them together, folded mattress and kept it folded with strap of linked belts so that it didn't block rear view mirrors.
I have X3 for reference. you should be fine in an estate

A people carrier maybe, a mini not so much.

Also, used brackets from folding rear seats to loop belts through to hold it below eye level

Ask the company you bought the new one from if they'll take the old one away for free. Ours did.

JustLyra · 27/11/2021 12:14

Roll it and tie it. Even good old mattresses can be rolled a bit

InTheLabyrinth · 27/11/2021 12:15

If it's a sprung mattress, and you can be bothered, you can cut out all the springs and leave for the scrap man. Then all the shredded fabric will fit in a car.

5zeds · 27/11/2021 12:16

I agree rolled and tied works. Check tip first though they have bananas rules at ours.

Have you checked to see if your council do a bulky waste collection? Ours is free, they'll do 1 collection every 2 months of up to 5 big items each time.

Bollindger · 27/11/2021 12:29

Facebook, you can offer the mattress for free to someone if they collect.
