Moonflower12 · 26/11/2021 22:19

Aibu to ask if anyone in the Peak District can tell me how much it is snowing there?

My friend is due to drive up early tomorrow and is worried about the road conditions etc.

Buxton Weather Watch has a few live web cams at the bottom of their page, (Cat and Fiddle, Winking Man) accurate information regularly updated too if she’s in that area. Also gives road closures.

BurntO · 26/11/2021 22:31

Use online road/traffic cameras….

Moonflower12 · 26/11/2021 22:33

Thank you @outofservice. I'll take a look now.

Was going to reference the Cat and Fiddle c as listed above. We live 20 mins from there and if there is snow wilfully be heading up for a lovely walk tomorrow. The main road is usually cleared quickly.

Moorlander · 26/11/2021 22:36

In Buxton now, snow has been falling most of the evening but none sticking so far!

Moonflower12 · 26/11/2021 22:38

@BurntO @countdowntonap @Moorlander
Thank you. This is all good news.

Not sure if you're up @Moonflower12 but this morning the snow has definitely stuck! The roads don't look great but it's worth checking later on re road closures. Best of luck to your friend.

I love just east of the very northern Peaks (east of Penistone and Holmfirth), local fb pages are reporting that Holme Moss, Woodhead and Snake Pass are all very snowy; I’m not sure if they are officially closed yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised. I live in the bottom of a valley, we often don’t get snow when everywhere else has. Today we do have snow, so I imagine the higher ground will be bad.

weshallneversurrender · 27/11/2021 05:41

Also in Buxton and it's bad here, meant to be having a friend from the south to visit this weekend and it's currently falling at 2cm an hour until midday, we have a good lot already stuck, and trees down etc from the winds - not ideal!

countdowntonap · 27/11/2021 06:08

Erm, I’ve changed my mind. We live 20 mins away (as above) from Peak District in the Moorlands and I’ve just opened the curtains to several inches of snow that weren’t forecast. I reckon it’s bad Buxton way this morning.

ShinyMe · 27/11/2021 06:19

I'm in Chesterfield in the town and we rarely get snow. I've woken up to very gusty sleety winds, driving all over the place in different directions. It doesn't appear to be sticking on the roads, but it's sticking on the cars and houses and road signs and is very wet and the winds are very strong. I would not want to be driving places like the Cat & Fiddle or the Snake, but I'm sure something like a quick drive down the road to the shops would be fine. So depends where your friend is going...

WeAreTheHeroes · 27/11/2021 06:23

Edge of the Peak District here and we have snow, though not a huge amount. I'm off into Manchester later by train. Buxton Weather Watch is excellent for info and webcams.

MikeWozniaksMohawk · 27/11/2021 06:28

I’m on the north west edge of the peaks near Manchester and we have snow that has settled overnight and it now looks like it’s raining. The wind is gusting a lot. The higher routes will be very snowy. Derbyshire constabulary have said to avoid Woodhead and Snake Passes.

MikeWozniaksMohawk · 27/11/2021 06:44

The council have just posted this

WeAreTheHeroes · 27/11/2021 07:08

Was just going to post the same Mike. It's extremely cold and very windy here. I am not looking forward to the walk to the station.

Moonflower12 · 27/11/2021 08:06

Thank you everyone. That's really good information. I've sent her this and she's making a decision a bit later.

At least 6 inches here in Buxton and drifts causing problems. A515 closed. A6 slow going. Passable but not great.

Peccary · 27/11/2021 08:14

North West Peak District here too, basically at the bottom of the Snake Pass (closed) A bit of snow but the wind is wild. Lots of closed roads further into the park

5foot5 · 27/11/2021 08:19

Oo er. We live on the edge of the Peak District in Macclesfield - other end of the Cat and Fiddle road from Buxton. However we are on a long weekend in Surrey. Might be an interesting drive home tomorrow

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 27/11/2021 08:20

@Peccary, same on this side of t’hills. I reckon the wind will be the bigger problem. The snow is melting already, but I reckon tye wind will freeze it, and turn the roads icey.

HomeSliceKnowsBest · 27/11/2021 08:48

It's stopped snowing now and the sun is out in Chapel-en-le-Frith.

The Macc to Buxton road is currently shut but Macc itself only has a light dusting 😊
