To ask about a nice day out in Paris?

For traffic really, but currently at Disneyland, can't hack another 3 days of this!

Thinking of going into Paris on Saturday but we don't really know what to do! Want something kid and adult friendly, see some things, have some food but kid friendly.

Don't really know much about Paris, help?

Disneyland Paris is crap. Go into Paris and do a bit of shopping or try to get tickets for the louvre. Even the food is better.

Porcupineintherough · 25/11/2021 23:25

How old are the children and what's the weather like?

WeeM · 25/11/2021 23:27

Honestly just wander about eating crepes and hot chocolate and looking in shops, it’s all so lovely! Boat trip maybe. Go see the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Arc de Triomphe. Ile de la cité is really nice for a wander as is the Latin Quarter...I’m so jealous!

dreamingbohemian · 25/11/2021 23:29

How old are the kids?

imamearcat · 25/11/2021 23:31

They are 4 and 6. DH been to Paris several times so he's not bothered but I haven't and just really want to see the sights!

Will all probably be over DS4's head but DD6 absolutely loves London, I'm sure she would love Paris too.

So we get off the train, where do we go?

Bateaux Mouches on the Seine (riverboat trip). Eiffel Tower. Pavement cafe.

Smidge001 · 25/11/2021 23:43

Go to montmartre and visit the sacré cœur. Super views. Instead of climbing the eiffel tower (which has queues for miles and expensive too), you can climb up on to the sacré cœur 's roof which is so much more fun than a set of stair cases. It's quite cheap, and most of it is one-way traffic so you go up one route, over the amazing roofs and then down as a sort of loop so you don't have to stand there letting other people pass, which seems to be the case when going up other viewing towers etc.
Honestly, it's fab.

PuttingOutFires · 25/11/2021 23:47

Yeah I second Montmartre- there's a funicular railway which would be fun for the kids.
The Centre Pompidou is good too- quite kid friendly if I recall. I'd avoid the Eiffel Tower and head to the Louvre instead.

Smidge001 · 25/11/2021 23:49

Just to add, when I say it's cheap, I think it's roughly 6 euros per adult, and young kids are free! Entrance to do the climb isn't that obvious - but it's to the left hand side of the building.

Confusedteacher · 25/11/2021 23:49

I really liked the Pompidou centre, the art is cool and the kids will like the quirky escalators on the outside of the building.

The Eiffel Tower is obviously lovely too but can be crowded- make sure you book online. With kids I wouldn’t bother with the Champs Elysees it’s just a long expensive shopping street!

Sacre Coeur and the Montmartre district is also lovely- nice old windy streets and you can go up Sacre Coeur and look out over the city.

Or, as others have said, a river cruise down the Seine is an easy win for everyone! You see some culture, the kids get to go on a boat Smile

catgirl1976 · 25/11/2021 23:50

Saint Chappelle is often overlooked but a must see for me

WeeM · 25/11/2021 23:51

Oh yeah Montmatre too, forgot about that. And I agree about the Eiffel Tower-go see it but don’t bother paying to go up it! There used to be a nice big wheel at the bottom of the Champs Elysee too but don’t know if that was a permanent thing. Got a cracking view from that.

FionaCorkesWardrobebyKamizole · 25/11/2021 23:56

Jardin de Luxembourg for the children, there is the most fantastic playground there, you can pay to go inside or just sit outside and watch them, it's very safe. They also have pony rides and a boating lake. Most restaurants will have a kid menu (which will be steak hache or chicken nuggets - always pick the steak hache!). You can try a more child friendly restaurant up like Hippopotamus if that's your thing for them (there's a good one near Place d'Italie if you want to do some shopping too)

My DC just like exploring, and getting on the Metro and the boats though!

crackofdoom · 26/11/2021 00:01

You could head to the Ile de la Cite, which is the island in the Seine at the very heart of Paris. Cite Metro or Saint Michel RER, and then BAM! There’s Notre Dame, right there! Right over there are Sainte- Chapelle and the Conciergerie- both great to visit- and if you go to the pointy end of the island by the Pont- Neufchâtel, that’s where you can take a sightseeing boat. Or walk across to the other island, Ile St Louis, which is mostly residential but quiet and pretty and has Berthillon’s fantastic ice creams!

PanplemousseRouge · 26/11/2021 00:02

Paris has some gorgeous parks - definitely worth having a walk around the Jardin du Luxembourg (about a 15 minute walk from the Louvre museum and Sainte-Chapelle, which other posters have recommended) or the Tuileries (about 10 mins walk from the Louvre).

The parc des Buttes-Chaumont is another really nice park - it’s a bit wilder and less neat than the other 2, and a bit further out, but also worth a visit.

Definitely second everyone else’s suggestions of visiting the Sacré Cœur cathedral in Montmartre, where you can get a really good view of the Eiffel Tower.

crackofdoom · 26/11/2021 00:02

Pont Neuf, not Neufchâtel. Autocorrect strikes again 🙄

MilkTooth · 26/11/2021 00:03

My son when he was younger adored the Jardins du Luxembourg, which are lovely to stroll in and have pony rides, a puppet theatre, a 19th carousel and little boats you can rent to sail on the pond. And a playground.

(These days he watches the chess and boules players.)

imamearcat · 26/11/2021 10:52

Thanks so much all I'll have a good read through later and investigate but some great tips.

Pompidou has stupidly long queues and is very expensive.
The eiffel tower is being repainted I believe so that's interesting.

I'd recommend the tour montparnasse. Much cheaper than the eiffel tower and a view... of the eiffel tower.

Also the musee du chocolat but careful as its shut on Monday.
Cite des sciences et industrie is very good.
Also any of the boat trips- you can do a short one, a longer one or eat.

You could do the catacombs if your children are brave like that :-)
Montmartre is pretty but hilly for kids.

trilbydoll · 26/11/2021 14:03

Montparnasse is the best thing in Paris, give me that over the Eiffel Tower any day.

We went to Disney last Feb and went into Paris on the Saturday, kids the same age as yours. Got off the metro at Arc de Triomphe, walked down Champs Elysee, saw Eiffel Tower and then went to Montparnasse. That was enough for everyone if I remember correctly!

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 26/11/2021 14:04

Another vote for jardin du Luxembourg.
Also there's an amazing ice cream shop on the ile St. Louis called Bertillon. You can buy their ice cream all over Paris but this is their actual parlour

Alldressedup · 26/11/2021 14:13

Agree with a lot of these recommendations.
Sacre Coure and Montmatre are lovely but can be very busy so just be aware.
It’s already been said but I agree with Tour de Montparnasse as a great trip for kids. Amazing views. We walked round the Eiffel Tower but didn’t go up - kids were very happy to stand at the bottom and look up instead!
Ile de la Cite is great to see the Notre Dam but again it can be very busy so head over to Ile St Louis afterwards for ice cream and some peace and quiet streets. Then just ride the metro and enjoy.
