BBC News - Female Doctor Who robs boys of role models, claims Tory MP
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-59421259

Anyone else see this?
I'm at a loss what his point is about "

"Female replacements on TV shows robs boys of good role models"

Presumably boys can still watch the original show with the male actor in it? They haven't been "cancelled"

Also, I'd make the argument that James Bond is popular, he is not necessarily a "good role model".

Or, is the MP making the link that it's women's fault for boys/men commiting crime? (Even though he denies this in a tweet)

I think the Tory Party is currently having a competition to mention TV shows in bizarre ways in speeches.

Quite Grin

Although could this be another way to detract from corruption, social care, the PM etc?
The dead cat

Bugger, have I fallen for it?

I honestly believe they have a hat with random bizarre topics in, they each pick one then go away & to write a speech about it. Most column inches gained wins a bottle of bubbly.

Yeah poor Boris picking 'Peppa Pig'!
ratspeaker · 25/11/2021 20:30

Oh yes it's all the women's fault!
No good role models for young men.
Well there's certainly not in the cabinet

PermanentTemporary · 25/11/2021 20:31

How is a female Dr Who not a good role model for boys?

iklboo · 25/11/2021 20:38

@PermanentTemporary - cos she's a wumman innit? Getting ideas above her station being a Time Lord & all that. Supposed to all be men! How very dare she? She should be back on Gallifrey cleaning & raising little Time Lordlets. Harrumph. Back in my day....

The MP is talking a whole stud farm of bollocks.

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/11/2021 20:39

Glad you asked. Heard this earlier on maybe WATO or PM, can’t remember.
Thought it was me losing the plot. Relieved it’s not (yet) Grin

dollyboots · 25/11/2021 20:42

At least having a female doctor finally stopped the huge female crime wave.

Oh wait.

Hmm
minou123 · 25/11/2021 20:44

I'm pleased I'm not the only one who is perplexed by this.

Either I'm not getting it or he is a doughnut.

You could be right.

Next..... Sajid Javid blames Toy Story for men cheating on thier wives because Andy stopped playing with Woody when Buzz Lightyear came along.

There are people who count these things on a regular basis, and there are far more male main characters in films, TV, and even bloody Cbeebies than female.

Men are so used to seeing themselves represented absolutely everywhere that even seeing a small increase in women makes them feel like women are taking over, even when that is very far from the case.

mbosnz · 25/11/2021 21:01

Will nobody think of the boys?!

VitalsStable · 25/11/2021 21:13

What young man aspires to be a fucking time lord?

Voord · 25/11/2021 21:29

Can’t a boys have female role models, or girls have male role models? Can they only have role models of the same gender?

On a wider point, ideally I’d like there to be more well-written, original female characters rather than just female versions of male characters.

Voord · 25/11/2021 21:31

Sorry, I mean sex not gender.

He is a male Tory MP, he has spent much of his life being trained to think that he is superior to everyone else, because he is a male Tory MP.

That’s my issue too. It is lazy to just swap a male character for a female one. It would be much better to keep the male character and add a female co star imho.

Pedalpushers · 25/11/2021 21:52

Funny how when none of these characters were female, women managed to avoid committing loads of crimes.

Pedalpushers · 25/11/2021 21:54

The book Mediocre is really good for discussing this sort of thing.

Barbarantia · 25/11/2021 21:58

So a female Dr who is taking away role models for boys?
So many questions...

I vote doughnut.

TyrannysaurusXXrightshoarder · 26/11/2021 07:05

He thinks boys ge straggled in to crime because their left with role models like Tommy Shelby instead of Doctor Who? He does know that the Doctor’s kill list is in the billions, right? Whereas Tommy Shelby - probably a hundred or so. He didn’t do his homework did he, the silly sausage.

Cornettoninja · 26/11/2021 08:59

I think that argument is a stretch tbh, I don’t think fictional role models are the solution to patterns of male crime.

Aside from that I come down on the side that I don’t really like making a traditionally male character female for the sake of it. It just feels forced and the rl point being made makes the suspension of reality fragile which in turn damages the success. I think the focus should be on developing female roles in their own right,

As an aside, I’m on the fence with dr who. Michelle Gomez was a fantastic interpretation of the master and would have been an amazing doctor. JW didn’t really do it for me as the doctor but I’m not sure if that’s her, the writing or me losing interest generally.

longtompot · 26/11/2021 09:07

My ed was amazed there are apparently only two, well three technically, role models for men/boys, and so far apart. She hadn't heard of The Krays and she is 24. Were there none others in between?
The whole article just made us laugh, and my dh later when he read it.
