To ask how you get CT scan results?

My dad had cancer last year adn just had his 12-month CT scan to check all is well.

The scan was 10 days ago and a phone call has been arranged in 10 days for the consultant to speak to him.

Is this normal or does it mean bad news? I Googled but all the results were about pre-Covid situations where a phone call then was a good sign (versus face to face appointment). Now I am not so sure.

Was the date for the follow-up phone call arranged at the same time as the scan?

If not, I would assume it's good news. I don't think they would delay a follow-upfor 10 days if cancer had returned.

If you are really frantic you could ask your GP to obtain a copy of the radiologist's report and forward it to you.

That seems normal . DF recently had a number of tests including scan , follow up call with consultant gave results and arranged to redo tests and review in a few months.

aibusux2u · 25/11/2021 13:54

@SilverBelle I think he was just told at the scan that results would be about 2 weeks. No info on how he would get them. I would hope that the delay is good news, but when you consider people are waiting hours for ambulances after heart attacks these days, who knows??

@LIZS Was it good news for your DF? My worry is that a phone call means bad news. Why don't they just send a letter if it's all clear??

My mother had a CT scan on a Saturday and then went in to work. Her doctor called me within a couple of hours of her appointment, because he couldn't reach her. It was not good news. The person who performed the scan notified the doctor he needed to look at it right away, which he did. So if they're waiting that long to discuss your father's scan, I'd say it's good news.

It was fine, scan showed nothing unusual so just scheduled a review in spring.

I had a recent CT scan and then an MRI. Both times I had to wait till I saw the consultant to get my results. Both were completely fine and normal. The radiology dept told me that if there was anything urgent my consultant would contact me sooner. I wouldn't read anything into it, it sounds like standard procedure.

I had a biopsy of a breast lump on a Friday and my doctor called me the following Tuesday with the results which were benign. She told me that they call because sometimes you need to talk to somebody even if the results are benign. She asked how I was feeling, and if I thought I needed to talk to a counselor or somebody like that then she could put me in touch with someone in her medical group.

LIZS · 25/11/2021 14:00

And it was a gap of about three weeks from scan to appointment.

Mermaidkisses · 25/11/2021 14:01

@SilverBelle
I had the same approximately 3 weeks ago, CT follow up after cancer treatment. Was told results would take 2 weeks nad a telephone consultantion was booked at the scan, its been this way ever since my diagnosis. Consultant rang exactly 2 weeks to the day - all clear :)

Newhorizon21 · 25/11/2021 14:03

You are describing a typical time frame between scan & follow up, you have the scan & a consultant or one of the team follow up in a couple of weeks. My dad was treated for cancer a few years ago & this is the routine for him now

Mermaidkisses · 25/11/2021 14:03

aibusux2u - sorry my comment was for you not silverbelle, multi tasking again!

Mustbeme124 · 25/11/2021 14:44

Your dad will be on a pathway which means results need to be ready within a certain time frame. Query cancer is a 2 week wait pathway so time frame is perfectly normal. I do CT scans and yes we would flag up if it needs an even more urgent report.
