This is a rubbish pub quiz prize?

I live in a fairly expensive area (London) and I went to a pub quiz recently where my team came first and won the prize. The prize was a £40 bar tab (less than we had already spent on our drinks, team of 4) which was awarded to us at the end of the evening ... obviously, as that was when the quiz was finished and all scores totted up. We'd have enough to drink at this stage. But we were given a £40 bar tab which had to be used within one week.

Well, none of the 4 of us want to go back to the pub and spend it within a week! Going to Pub Quiz is a once every 2 or 3 months event for us, none of us in the team would go to a pub and spend that kind of money every week.

It's obviously ok (first world problem!) but we won't be using our prize. But it's a shit prize, yes?

And yes of course I know pubs have had a terrible couple of years. But so have their punters. If they wanted us to come back to the quiz they would have given their prize better consideration. Aibu?

YANBU but I'd have sold it on to the runners up or a regular team for £30.

Porfre · 23/11/2021 20:32

Didnt you know what the prize was at the start of the quiz?

A580Hojas · 23/11/2021 20:33

Porfre - no. £40 bar tab would be fine, just not that it had to be spent within a week.

Standard for a pub quiz. It’s to try to get you to make it a regular thing and visit the pub more.

LubaLuca · 23/11/2021 20:36

That's not unusual. Your entry fee covers the cost of an evening's entertainment, a worthwhile prize is a bonus. I never enter pub quizzes for the prize anyway, I enter for the glory of winning Grin

DietCokeChipsAndMayo · 23/11/2021 20:36

I’m a regular at our pub quiz, first prize is a £25 bar token … or so I hear, I’ve never actually won, we did come second once and spent our £10 token on snacks for the next week quiz Grin
£40 sounds like a very generous prize to me!

A580Hojas · 23/11/2021 20:37

Except it won't work for some. We'll just look around for a better quiz - at least we have plenty of choice here.

Did you pay to enter the quiz? Our local is free to enter and the prize is a free drink for each team member. Seems reasonable as we haven’t paid to enter.

A580Hojas · 23/11/2021 20:40

Only £2 each to enter, no problem with that.

It's pretty standard

Dollywilde · 23/11/2021 20:44

YABU, it’s standard. Me and a few mates accidentally got into a loop of continually winning it and having to go the following week. It got a bit embarrassing, we had to schedule a Saturday afternoon pub trip to get out of the cycle Grin

MrsTophamHat · 23/11/2021 20:49

I don't think most people do pub quizzes for the prize in my experience. They're just quite intrinsically fun. Ones i've been to in the past usually just give some alcohol, and one had sort of a jackpot type game at the end of the night that you paid extra to enter and often rolled over, so sometimes that prize would be a couple of hundred pounds.

thumpingrug · 23/11/2021 22:05

a) if the prize was that important to you, you should have taken the time to find out what it was before you entered,
b) its a quiz thats clearly for regulars and locals to encourage them to use the pub and generate trade after a rough couple of years
c) you're being unreasonable.

CherryRedDMs · 23/11/2021 22:10

Way better than the one I used to go to, where the prize was a bottle of something they’d been unable to sell.
Depending on the area and what the pub sell, could you not do a bit of good? Takeaway coffees for big issue sellers or whatever.

MoiraNotRuby · 23/11/2021 22:22

I went to a school quiz where the prize was house points for your child, £40 to spend in the pub would be great imo!!!

upaladderagain · 23/11/2021 22:36

It's not the prize that matters, it's the gloating when you win ....

whynotwhatknot · 23/11/2021 22:41

if they didnt make it clear beforehand then yanbu

drpet49 · 23/11/2021 22:42

Has to be used in a week is rubbish

PikachuAndMe · 23/11/2021 23:05

That does seem a bit mean.

Our one is a pound in per person. £40 cash to the winning team and a round of drinks to the team second from last. We've won a few times and have always used the cash to buy a couple of rounds the next time we went. We go every few weeks so your top prize would really annoyed me.

ChargingBuck · 23/11/2021 23:39

YABU.

Did you really enter a pub quiz for a prize, & not the fun & companionship?

Saysama · 23/11/2021 23:44

We get circa £100-150 on the pubs around me (also London), and a month to spend it (but it needs to be spent in one go, you can’t use it on multiple visits). And then second prize is usually a bottle of something.

The point of a pub quiz is the fun, but I’d still be a bit disappointed with what you’d won.

ChargingBuck · 23/11/2021 23:52

Blimey.

I've been in winning pub quiz teams who were happy to be given a bag of porky scratchings as a prize.

Maybe stay out of the pub & do some overtime if you want to be given cash for your input?

Kite22 · 23/11/2021 23:57

I do agree with most that most people don't enter a pub quiz for the prize.
If the prize were important to you, then you should have investigated it beforehand however I do think "within a week" is a bit tight, and do think it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect 2 or 3 weeks in which to spend it.

WhatDidISayAlan · 23/11/2021 23:59

I’d be fine with that. The one at my uncle’s cricket club quiz is a pound in, and the winner gets a tray of Warburton’s goods (raisin loaf, crumpets, potato cakes etc) cos the treasurer works in the finance dept of the Warbies offices in Bolton 😁

FluffyBooBoo · 24/11/2021 00:00

Can they also do off-licence sales? If so you could buy alcohol to take away with you

Better than the tenner prize at the pub quiz I used to go to.
