I'm doing a senior home care job. The mileage between clients is paid at 25p a mile. I've heard of 45p being paid but think this might be London rates. Is 25p normal outside of London?

45p is the maximum HMRC allow with it becoming taxable (up to 10,000 miles pa) . Many companies do pay that so 25p seems tight . You can claim the difference against tax. However if you a low rate tax payer you don't recover that much.

When I travelled for work (not care) ours was about 27p per mile

No. 45p per mile up to the first 10,000 miles and 25p per mile over that is normal.

If you put in mileage sheets your employer cand decide how much to pay you, but how they choose to pay you has other ramifications. If they don'tpay you 45p/mile then you should be filling out a tax relief form every year to claim the rest of your allowance. And they will have a form to fill out also

Thanks everyone. Very useful to know about the reclaim form. I expect they're tight on pay too. I shall try and keep a good record of hours worked. Already I find myself going over.

Also paying 45p/mile in my company.

Our work has three levels of pay for mileage. 27p, 45p and 55p. I think it’s really tight.
