Food shop.. money hasn't come out of bank.

Hi all. I get my shopping delivered every week usually by Tesco - who take the money out in the morning prior to delivery. No issues.

I decided to use Sainsburys this week. I have used them a few times before...

Shopping arrived yesterday. Just went to check dp's mobile banking (food shop comes out of his bank)!

Any idea why? Was delivered 9am yesterday so would expected it to come out first thing yesterday too.

Should I contact them? Or is it just being a bit slow?!

Rather strange.

We use Sainsbury’s and it never comes out the day before (how do they know how much to take without knowing if things are unavailable or if you’ve asked for food that’s done by weight eg 5 carrots where the price will come when they weigh it?).
But it does normally come out the same day I think. If you’ve not used Sainsbury’s before did you put the right card details? Not yours by mistake instead of DH’s? I imagine it’s just slow.

I know we didn't come out the day before. It was delivered yesterday at 9am, usually I would expect money to come out before that. Receipt come from through at 6am yesterday morning. It's been 24 hours + now!

When there's been a problem with card details before it either wouldn't let me check out or they would ring. Very bizarre. I'll wait it out until tomorrow and see if payment is taken.

It's definitely not come out of mine. It would have been declined due to not having much left. Spent out this week 🤯

It often takes two or three working days for debit card transactions to appear on my account - eg put £10 on National Lottery account on a Friday to buy a Euromillions ticket, it appears in my lottery account instantly but the transaction doesn't go through at my bank until the following Monday or even Tuesday. I suspect what could be happening is that Tesco are actually applying the transaction a day or two before the delivery whereas Sainsbury's do it on the day.

slashlover · 23/11/2021 11:36

Can you check your pending transactions? I often have payments pending for a few days before actually coming out, they're usually off the available balance though.

This.

It'll be pending. Takes a couple of days for the transaction to actually show on your account, although your total balance will show minus the cost of your shopping.

Chloemol · 23/11/2021 11:59

I pay via PayPal it takes a couple of days

Can you check pending transactions on your card!

TakeYourFinalPosition · 23/11/2021 12:01

Sometimes it just glitches and takes longer - either on the stores side, where payments aren’t processed as quickly, or on your banks side.

They will take it. They have six months to do so using the details you provided, and after that six years to reclaim the money but they should give you notice first… but I’d be surprised if you made it six weeks, it’ll likely be processed and sorted by the end of the week.

HarrietsChariot · 23/11/2021 12:21

They'll take the money soon enough. They can take the payment any time over the next few months, just make sure you keep an eye out.

I think I've only had one transaction that didn't come through eventually, that was back in the old days where you signed for your purchases. I'd bought something, then thought I'd buy another one for someone else, so two identical transactions were processed one after the other by the cashier and they must have thought it was a duplicate by mistake.

Really? You don't have a Pending Transactions list? If I bought something online right now, it would show immediately on my pending transactions list on my Halifax online banking. Thank god too! It's helped me to detect fraud a lot earlier before.
Calee03 · 23/11/2021 12:52

It's not showing as pending. Dp is with Santander and pending transactions show up at the top and gets deducted from 'balance including pending'. Nothing is there. Very bizarre as it comes out same day before it's delivered with Tesco!

It can take up to 6 months to appear.

Otherpeoplesteens · 23/11/2021 14:41

@Almostmenopausal

To be honest, apart from the odd £10 to national lottery account every time the jackpot goes above £100m couple of months I could go from one year's end without ever using my debit card for payment. I don't even know if my online banking has a pending transactions list.
