To ask for help with cold and sore throat

Dishwashersaurous · 22/11/2021 08:46

So I've finally succumbed to the worse cold ever. I feel like absolute death. My throat is being stabbed and is on fire. I cant sleep for coughing.

It's not covid.

I've done lempsip. Strepsils. Gargling with salt water. Boiling hot steaming bath. I just want to be able to breathe without it hurting and go to sleep.

So please good people tell me your tips. I will try anything

First thing in the morning swallow a crushed Clove of raw garlic, and follow it with a large glass of water.

You will feel the insides of your sinus drying up. Repeat daily til sorted, usually needs less than a fortnight. You will know when it's no longer required.

In future, start again at the first tickle of a cold.

I take it you’re taking regular pain relief? I feel for you, I remember thinking my head was going to explode when I had tonsillitis. Think I gargled with aspirin (if safe to do so).

RunnerDuck2020 · 22/11/2021 09:10

Have you tried a vapour rub plug for overnight? I bought one for my baby feeling a bit sceptical about how much good it would do but it’s been really helpful for my cold this week as well!

Guacamole001 · 22/11/2021 09:11

Vitamin c twice daily.

esloquehay · 22/11/2021 09:13

Garlic, ginger, water, honey, lemon chucked in a pan. Bring to the boil, then simmer.
Tastes unexpectedly good and has helped any cold/sore throat I've had in recent years.

PicaK · 22/11/2021 09:32

I've got that too. It's really doing the rounds. Worse than a cold but not full 'flu.

Exhausteddog · 22/11/2021 09:35

I read (possibly on here) that putting vaporub on your feet at night was supposed to help (I think with socks on) No idea how or why but I've heard it worked for several people.

Nsws2015 · 22/11/2021 10:44

Difflam spray for the throat and bronchostop pastilles for the cough...the pastilles not the syrup unless you wanna add being sick to the mix cos it's vile 🤣 they're the only things that help me when my throat is bad or I have a chest infection. Well tyrozets used to be the best thing throat wise but they've stopped making them so I'm rationing what I have left! Regular painkillers too, hope you manage to get some sleep!

LindaEllen · 22/11/2021 11:08

I've found that you just have to keep really on top of your pain relief, so paracetamol & ibuprofen every 4 hours, drink water like there's no tomorrow, interspersed with comforting hot drinks. Eat lots of fruit and veg for vitamins to help your body fight it.

Colds/coughs/sore throats are notoriously difficult to treat - there's nothing that they've ever really come up with. A lot of it is simply riding it out unfortunately, even though it's bloody horrible :(.

TotallySuper · 22/11/2021 11:10

Poor you. Only honey, lemon and ginger regularly works for me. I find difflam rubbish but ultra chloroseptic throat spray really good. I also use sudafed nasal spray. Good luck.

Dishwashersaurous · 23/11/2021 08:16

Thanks all. Day three and feeling even worse. Having to crawl to the bathroom

Menthol crystals, sprinkle a few into a bowl (use ceramic) and inhale. As pp said, lemon and honey with paracetamol (if safe).

Was going to suggest this! I'm considering switching all the glade plug ins for them hehe

These are great too. I would just like to emphasise how few you need though!!
Purplepalm · 23/11/2021 08:31

I’ve got this too it’s awful. I’m also pregnant so can’t take anything much for it Sad I’m just having lots of hot honey and lemons

hellcatspangle · 23/11/2021 08:36

Day nurse capsules during the day, night nurse liquid before bed. For a cough pholcodiene cough suppressant, sore throat gargle soluble aspirin.

MNFHD · 23/11/2021 08:46

I am day 12 and still very very poorly. It seems to go a bit better and then then the next day back worse than before. Its just a matter of time, drink lots and night nurse helped me to get some sleep. I have a friend who has still got it 5 weeks later and still feeling ill.

Dishwashersaurous · 23/11/2021 08:48

Oh god day 12. Noooo

I've taken now day two off work but it's absolutely piling up and can't miss much more

Yes sorry Day 12 is correct. Strange thing is I have been coughing and sneezing all of this time but my husband has not caught it, although he does keep a barge pole length away from me.
PlanDeRaccordement · 23/11/2021 09:00

You might have a cold + strep throat. You could call GP and ask for throat swab. If you have strep throat you need antibiotics.

HoseMeDownWithHolyWater · 23/11/2021 09:01

Neti Pot from Amazon if you're congested.

Rubadubdub21 · 23/11/2021 09:04

Cough mixture. I've been using benylin for chesty coughs within hours of coughing/having a sore throat and it clears up within 48 hours. I hope you feel better soon

TDogsInHats · 23/11/2021 09:06

Not to worry anyone but I started off with a bad/awful throat and then sneezing and eventually covid 19.
The throat spray and Night Nurse helped me, I feel very fortunate that it's not got too bad and have managed at home.
Get well soon.Flowers

Dishwashersaurous · 23/11/2021 09:08

Thanks everyone.

So night nurse last night and I actually slept.

Benylin cough mixture seems to do something.

Plus lempsip

Plus ibuprofen

Plus lying in bed.

But still coughing loads and shivering etc.

Hot water, but not too much, with slots of freshly squeezed lemon and few tbsps of honey- several times a day.
Honey is a natural anti inflammatory product.

Lemon obviously for its vitamin C.

If your throat sore badly then you can take a few tbsps of honey just by itself.

Butter milk will soothe your sore throat too and it's also supporting creating probiotics in your intestines.
Which are needed for good and strong immunity.
