To think the McDonalds Advert is a blatant copy of John Lewis style

If I hadn’t already seen the John Lewis Christmas Avert I would have thought the McDonalds one was them

Not sure what they get from blatantly copying them but it made me laugh

Marketing is fascinating

I don't really get why McDonalds needs^ a Christmas advert at all. At least John Lewis sells things you may like to buy as presents.

I've not seen this year's though-another Hmm tear jerker?

Butterflyfluff · 21/11/2021 21:33

Agree, I have literally no idea why they have done it as, unless you watch to the end, or notice the restaurant in the background, you wouldn’t even know it was for McD

There must be a method in their madness though

I think it’s the best advert of the year. Though preferred last years with the single mum and her reconnecting with her moody teenager. Had a right weep at that one.

Butterflyfluff · 21/11/2021 21:45

I love it - I like the moomin thing

I hated last year's. I wondered where the teenager's Dad was, and why he was so miserable. And if only taking a grumpy teen to McDonalds would cheer them up.

FoxInABox · 21/11/2021 21:49

I agree it is a copy of their tear jerker style. I’m not a big fan of the John Lewis advert this year- love the McDonald’s one. Though I think the Bounty one is great too, DS was not impressed last year with their sense of humour with the bounty’s in the celebrations advent calendar, but even he felt sorry for them after seeing the advert!

countdowntonap · 21/11/2021 21:52

It’s much better than the John Lewis advert, and doubt they would’ve had the time to make a ‘copy’ this good in a couple of weeks.

Sparklingbrook · 21/11/2021 21:53

But will it have everyone rushing down to Maccies over Christmas?

WomanStanleyWoman · 21/11/2021 21:54

So basically you’re annoyed that two major companies have noticed a trend in advertising and followed it?

Same reason Coca Cola need one?

Why would you buy an ice cold drink in the winter?

Same goes for why would you go and buy relatively basic fast food in a time of feasting/indulgence?

Because they want to convince you to spend money with them all year round, so they create the marketing specifically to get you to buy that product... (And talking about them online in forums, this driving up their revenue as people go and look at their adverts online etc...)

Where did I say I was annoyed?

I just think it’s funny the McD have blatantly copied JL style

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 21/11/2021 21:58

Well TBF I need Coca Cola for my Southern Comfort at Christmas, with ice too. Shock

There's nothing I need from McDonalds over the festive period, so I am afraid I will be immune to this advert. Grin

I didn’t say they’d copied this years JL advert - it’s just very JL style, more like previous years than this one
OP posts:
WomanStanleyWoman · 21/11/2021 21:59

But what’s funny about it? There are loads of similar ads around. Have you not seen supermarket adverts in recent years? How many of them feature a happy multi-racial family coming together for Christmas?

00100001 · 21/11/2021 21:59

John Lewis don't own the idea of a "heart wrenching" advertisement :p

Not even carrot sticks reindeer treats???

You know because obviously you need their bag of mini carrots, and not a bog standard carrot that gets used the next day for lunch...

00100001 · 21/11/2021 22:02

But yes, you're right it does have a John Lewis Feel about it.

FitAt50 · 21/11/2021 22:03

I totally agree - its very like all past John Lewis Christmas adverts, even down to the style of song.

Can people please read the OP words before having a go. She says "copy of John Lewis style" not this years John Lewis advert.

Sparklingbrook · 21/11/2021 22:05

The reindeer used to get a bog standard carrot from the supermarket. Grin

00100001 · 21/11/2021 22:05

I like that Coca bash out the same advert every year...don't even bother to spend money making a new one. You've got everything you need... excitement, snow, father Christmas, bells, lights etc...

00100001 · 21/11/2021 22:08

Poor things

They could have as delicate little reindeer treat... But no you just shove a massive carrot for them to gorge on.... No wonder there's an obesity crisis amongst magical reindeer...

Shame on you. Get yourself to Maccys and think of the poor animals!

jcyclops · 21/11/2021 22:29

I haven't seen the McD's advert yet. How much are the reindeer burgers?

Really? Didn’t it occur to you that the missing dad might be the reason for his sadness. Are single parent families and why they might be that, so hard to fathom?

My teens certainly perk up at a McDonald’s, though prefer KFC!

VaulterTech · 21/11/2021 22:53

It is, but it’s my fav one I think….!

Sparklingbrook · 21/11/2021 23:05

Not hard to fathom,no. It was never explained. Had he run off with the neighbour? Was he dead? Who knows?
Whatever it was it was fixed by a trip to the Golden Arches apparently.
