To fear for Peng Shuai?

Apologies if this has been posted - couldn’t see anything.

Peng Shuai hasn’t been since the 2nd November after posting about her sexual assault on the heavily monitored and moderated Chinese social media.

I think I’m not alone in thinking that the worst has happened. She has apparently emailed and posted she’s fine, but everything is incredibly sketchy.

This should not be happening in 2021, but I’m aware I live a privileged life in the UK where I am allowed to post what I want (to an extent) and have very little working knowledge of the Chinese regime.

Horrific.

My husband is an avid follower of various groups/channels who highlight the inhumane treatment of Chinese people by the CCP. Sadly Penguin is one of many. It's fantastic that the media and sports personalities etc are talking about this. Action needs to be taken against the CCP but sadly money talks so many governments turn a blind eye.

The very fact that your post has had no other response shows how little is actually known in the general public about the genocide, propaganda etc going on in China. The general Chinese population are living in fear or are so brainwashed they believe everything they are told.

Massive apologies to the auto correct of Peng's name to Penguin. Incredibly inappropriate.
Claudethecat · 21/11/2021 12:32

It is dreadful, OP. God knows what has happened to her (or is happening). It is just horrific, as you say.

RJnomore1 · 21/11/2021 12:33

I am very fearful for her too.

We like to bury our heads about what’s going on in the rest of the world really.

ChampagneCommunist · 21/11/2021 12:39

She has been so, so brave in speaking out. I just wish she could get to a border and get out, but I suspect she's being tightly guarded

BigbreastsBiggerbeard · 21/11/2021 12:44

I hadn't heard about this. Frightening. I really hope she's ok.

Lordamighty · 21/11/2021 12:49

Absolutely terrifying that a young woman should be penalised for speaking out about sexual assault. Peng Shuai, we should all keep saying her name until she is safe.

DidgeDoolittle · 21/11/2021 12:51

I've been following this and its extremely worrying.
I went to China a few years ago. It's a beautiful country with amazing people, but the censorship of the media is frightening.
When we were in Tianneman square we asked our guide about the past demonstrations by students etc. He said he knew nothing about them.
When we were on our own he told us that of course he knew about them, he had watched online when in Europe. He also said that there were many demos all over China at the time. The ccp kept them very quiet.

bowchickawowwoww · 21/11/2021 12:53

It's in the DM she was pictured this morning at a children's tennis tournament.

joangray38 · 21/11/2021 13:31

My old next door neighbour was one of the very first TEFL teachers allowed in to China nearly 30 years ago. She worked at several unis and students and their families often disappeared, no one ever mentioned it or them, it was like they never existed. Even with the advent of social media it isn’t really talked about but it’s terrible that the Chinese govt get away with so many atrocities.

This isn't proof she is safe.
DramaAlpaca · 21/11/2021 13:55

It's very worrying.

BillDates · 21/11/2021 18:57

These you tubers have been talking about her for a while now. They're both men who lived in China for a long time and have Chinese wives, and listening to their stories over the last few years I've been watching them, I agree, a photo at a tennis court doesn't mean she is safe.

This is one of their recent episodes but their older content around Chinese culture is interesting .

I lived in China for 12 years and don’t agree that the the general population is living in fear. For a great many Han Chinese life has never been so good: higher salaries, opportunities to travel, high speed trains, improvements in healthcare, lower pollution levels, 5 hotels and 5 shopping. China changed massively in the 12 years I lived there.
Ostryga · 22/11/2021 07:34

Yeah China is great! Unless you say something the regime doesn’t like and then you’re completely fucked.

Just because people like a high wage doesn’t mean it’s a good place to live. There is no freedom.

OP posts:
ShanghaiDiva · 22/11/2021 09:28

You missed my point: when your life is good, why would you complain about the government?

Ostryga · 22/11/2021 09:38

They can’t complain about the govt?! Everything is monitored and if you speak out you go ‘missing’.

OP posts:
ShanghaiDiva · 22/11/2021 09:58

I lived in China for 12 years and am very aware of the restrictions imposed by the govt. However, to say there is no freedom is a simplification of life in China.
A previous poster stated that the general population of China lives in fear hence nobody speaks out. My point is for most Han Chinese life has never been so good: there is little to complain about. People generally concern themselves with their own comforts. That is not unique to China. Human beings are generally pretty selfish ime.
I am in no way condoning the actions of the Chinese govt. I have seen first hand the issues in Xinjiang province and controls have certainly tightened since Xi came to power.

HarrietsChariot · 22/11/2021 10:04

The only way China will change is if the world stops buying their products - hit them in the pocket. But people seem happy with the fact that their are countless human rights abuses carried out in China on a daily basis, provided they can get their electronics and clothes a little cheaper.
