Contraceptive implant & constant bleeding

CaveWoman1 · 20/11/2021 12:50

Has anyone else had the implant & did you suffer bleeding with it? I had one fitted at the beginning of Oct this year, and the first month was normal, no bleeding at all. Then had a period which started around the 4th Nov - lighter than usual but went on for a while I thought. But I haven’t stopped bleeding since! Sometimes just spotting, sometimes quite heavy like today.

I realise this can be a usual reaction for women who’ve had the implant but my question is how long does it go on for? I can put up with it for a month or two but I'm worried this might be the norm? Can that be the case long-term does anybody know?

I had this with one of my implants and went to the Doc for Norethisterone(?) to stop the bleeding. Took it for a few days and that seemed to sort out out.

Karma1981 · 20/11/2021 13:03

I had the same, went on the pill for a month and that stopped it and I haven't bled since (been 6 months now).

ThorsLeftNut · 20/11/2021 13:03

I’ve had mine in since July, three weeks of nothing and bleeding ever since. My GP said three months is ‘normal’ so I have a review soon to discuss having it removed because it’s ridiculous now.

Tee20x · 20/11/2021 13:08

It can go on for quite long I'm afraid. For my first implant I had spotting for a good few months. I'm talking like 6-7 maybe before it stopped for the next few years.

CaveWoman1 · 20/11/2021 13:10

@ThorsLeftNut

😲 Since July??!!!!! Sounds like the pill might stop the bleeding???

I had that for 11 months before they finally agreed to removing my implant. They keeps refusing saying I needed to give it at least a year to settle in (fine for them, they aren't living with the constant bleeding and low moods). Eventually they agreed after I said I'd remove it myself instead.

CaveWoman1 · 20/11/2021 13:11

@Tee20x

That’s so long 😕

Yes, when I had it in I had 6 months of constant bleeding and a further 6 of on and off bleeding, it also affected my mood really negatively. Just over 18 months until they agreed to take it out.

MrsLeclerc · 20/11/2021 13:14

I had bleeding from a few weeks after. It was like a period for months on end. I lasted 3 months before asking for it to be removed.

Dr offered to put me on the pill but I chose the implant due to DVT concerns (close family history). I had it after giving birth and couldn’t cope with the constant bleeding. They kept saying it would ease off or stop but it was becoming unbearable for me.

Mary46 · 20/11/2021 13:15

Disappointed in it. My bleeding never really settled got it out after a year. But coil suits me now. But it wasnt for me all this stop start bleeding

CaveWoman1 · 20/11/2021 13:18

Oh no these experiences aren’t good

Dungabees · 20/11/2021 13:21

I had constant bleeding for a year with the copper coil. It’s fine now and really suits me.

TakeMeToKernow · 20/11/2021 13:29

I had pretty much non stop bleeding/spotting. As others experienced, the GP refused to remove it after 6 months and said I should leave it longer. I think it was probably 12 months when I finally persuaded them to take it out. I switched to the mirena coil. Getting it is pretty traumatic, but so much better afterwards (I didn’t get no periods, which I know some do). Had it 6 years, having a break currently, should probably put on my brave pants and go and have a new one.

Tee20x · 20/11/2021 13:31

I know OP there were many times where I wanted to give up and just get it removed. But then I thought about having to wait for my cycle to return to normal etc so I just persisted with it.

Luckily it was just spotting and wasn't full on bleeding so it wasn't that bad for me, but in the end I was glad I stuck it out as I didn't see so much as a spot of blood for the next few years. Ditto when I got it replaced after it had expired.

It was good not having to think about taking a pill everyday so for me it was worth it!

EuromamaAussiekids · 20/11/2021 13:40

Reading through these responses I find it very concerning that once the implant is put in doctors are very reluctant to remove it even if the bleeding is excessive. One op mentioned having to threaten to remove it herself if they would
Not do it for her.

CaveWoman1 · 20/11/2021 14:18

@thedevilinablackdress

Only had to take it for a few days? I might try that then, I’m so fed up with constantly bleeding

Jabvribt · 20/11/2021 14:40

I had this after having the implant June time this year and the doctor put me on the mini pill on top of it for 3 months and it’s sorted it out.

thedevilinablackdress · 20/11/2021 14:44

Yes, it just seemed to 'reset' it @cavewoman1

amusedbush · 20/11/2021 14:46

I bled every single day for 16 weeks before they would give me the pill to sort it out. However, then came the spotty face, hair falling out and, depression and suicidal thoughts. I was such a paranoid, unreasonable basket case I’m convinced it contributed to being dumped by my then-boyfriend of three years.

I finally demanded that the family planning clinic remove it and my moods completely stabilised.

Toastytoads · 20/11/2021 15:27

I had it for a year until I begged and pleaded them to remove it. I threatened to cut it out myself as it send me loopy.

MyComputerGetsSadWithoutMe · 20/11/2021 15:31

I had mine in for a year and constantly spotted the whole year, and got pregnant. I wouldn't ever have it again.

CaveWoman1 · 20/11/2021 15:56

I want mine out now!!

OP posts:
MakeMineALarge1 · 20/11/2021 16:54

I think I am one of the success stories, had one put in in 2008, replaced every 3 years and not had one bleed since the day it was put in!

GratefulEgg · 20/11/2021 16:57

I had the same and honestly I gave up and got it taken our after 6 months of non stop bleeding.
