Trying to settle a debate with DP.
If gong to work a late afternoon/evening shift, would you eat garlic in a pasta sauce for lunch?
One things no, one things if you do your teeth and use mouthwash it’s fine?

YABU - eat the garlic
YANBU - don’t eat the garlic

It depends. Garlic sticks on some people's breath and not on others.

Also depends on what kind of job you do.

redtshirt50 · 19/11/2021 11:01

I would do this without brushing my teeth, how much garlic are you talking?!

But if you plan to clean your teeth then I can’t see any problem at all.

You could also have chewing gum, or even eat an apple. That’s supposed to get rid of garlic smell

Letsnotargue · 19/11/2021 11:01

I would say eat what you like. Work impacts enough on daily life without dictating what you can eat for lunch as well. I don’t eat smelly food at work, but if there’s a chance a colleague will know I’ve eaten garlic in the last 24 hours I really don’t care, with the usual hygiene measures in place as you would anyway.

My ex-MIL wouldn’t eat anything spicy, garlicky etc if she was going to work the next day, so could only eat ‘interesting’ food two days a week. Bonkers.

Phyllobates · 19/11/2021 11:01

I like garlic, so I would eat it.

Bubblegum does exist.

HarrietsChariot · 19/11/2021 11:02

No, you shouldn't have garlic during the daytime, there's no point. Have it in the evening, that's when vampires come out.

CovidMakesThingsHard · 19/11/2021 11:02

Half a garlic bulb in tomato sauce per person

This is the one good thing about the pandemic & wearing a mask on 13hours shifts: you can eat really smelly stuff the night before 😇

Snoopsnoggysnog · 19/11/2021 11:04

Half a bulb, do you mean half a clove?!

tealandteal · 19/11/2021 11:05

Half a bulb per person?! I like garlic but are you living in a vampire hotspot? I usually use a clove or two.

Herja · 19/11/2021 11:05

You can smell garlic on skin anyway.

If people's noses are sensitive (like mine) they will smell garlic anyway, if it's leftovers. If not sensitive, then not an issue eiither way really. (This is job dependent! I had a midwife who stank of garlic from her skin and had sushi breath. It made me puke. Avoid if a dentist, midwife etc.)

I say eat the pasta!

lancaster · 19/11/2021 11:06

Of course you should eat it. Garlic isn't a bad smell anyway. Much better than cigarettes or stale coffee.

CounsellorTroi · 19/11/2021 11:07

The garlic smell comes from the stomach, brushing your teeth and mouthwashing won’t make any difference.

CovidMakesThingsHard · 19/11/2021 11:08

@Snoopsnoggysnog

Half a bulb, do you mean half a clove?!
Shit yes half a clove! Half a bulb there would be no question it is antisocial!

It wouldn't occur to me that I shouldn't tbh!

HorseGallopingOnATomato · 19/11/2021 11:13

I have never been able to smell what colleagues ate for lunch/ breakfast several hours prior. Unless you are an optician or dentist or something and you’ll get really close to people’s faces, I’d say eat what you like!

TotallySuper · 19/11/2021 11:14

I'd brush my teeth use mouthwash then have mints regularly throughout my shift and I'd be fine.

riotlady · 19/11/2021 11:18

Honestly wouldn’t even occur to me to brush my teeth after having pasta sauce for lunch.

Stillafatknacker · 19/11/2021 11:18

I'd eat it !

When I was in my twenties, I was so proud of myself one evening for making homemade garlic bread only I'd used a full bulb of garlic instead of a clove, the next day I stunk the whole corridor and department out at work Blush Grin

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 19/11/2021 11:18

Half a clover per person is absolutely fine.
I usually use more when cooking but if just before work I would probably brush my teeth/mouthwash or take mints.

UltimateBugKilla · 19/11/2021 11:19

Eat the garlic!

Fatgalslim · 19/11/2021 11:37

I eat garlic most days, last night I roasted a full bulb and ate it with my steak, yes the full bulb. I just brush my teeth as normal, if someone else can smell it then tough, there's worse smells

RonSwansonsChair · 19/11/2021 11:39

I'd happily eat that, but my sis wouldn't. She thinks garlic comes out her pores and she stinks, she doesn't really but she's paranoid about it so doesn't eat garlic

JingsMahBucket · 19/11/2021 11:44

It’s not the 1800s where garlic is considered “spicy foreign food” by pale British people. Eat the freaking garlic. Seriously, nobody cares.

Dogscanteatonions · 19/11/2021 12:36

I can't make anything with less than about 5 cloves of garlic if it's in the recipe! Have the garlic, use gum.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 19/11/2021 12:37

I care. Some people absolutely stink of the stuff. Turns my stomach. Loathe the stuff.
I don't think it's just on their breath though. Not sure mouthwash would help really.
