Women will have to wait for ages for the loo…

If the Playhouse theatre (KitKat club) has its way.

I went tonight.

the toilets no longer say men’ and ‘women’ but ‘toilets’ (‘unisex) and ‘urinals’ (presumably for men… as women don’t generally pee standing up).

That means men are being invited to go into the urinals AND the toilets and women are invited only into the toilets. And yet everyone knows that it’s women who are always having to wait forever for the toilet at public events.

The door signs aren’t even accurate as the ‘urinals’ bathrooms also have cubicles (I asked a man) - so all the ‘urinal’ bit of the sign does is deter women from entering

In practice only women were in the ‘toilet‘ queue - but I heard more than one woman wonder if these were now unisex toilet

No women were in the urinal queue (because, as usual, there wasn’t one).

If the theatre can’t update the facilities to make them gender neutral (The downstairs cubicles don’t even lock) then perhaps they should hold off acting as if they are?

Or if they want to avoid ‘men’ and ‘woman’ while not having unisex facilities why not herd people into the sex appropriate toilet by banging a few tampax machine in the toilets and writing ‘sanitary products’ on the old womens door to go with urinals for them men.

AIBU to think the Playhouse policy discriminates against women (who already have to queue ages for the loo) and is also a bit stupid

You have a point but I’d suggest most men at the theatre will just use the urinal. I can’t imagine there are a lot of men having a poo during the interval.

Yes I did think that too! But it’s more the principle

Went to somewhere with unisex toilets recently (norwich su) and it was similar. Urinals for men, cubicle for all

In practice men seemed to use both (indluding the floor apparently in the cubicles), some men seemed to sheepishly hide in the urinal section, others seemed to want to use the cubicles. Women obviously had to queue

And actually was suprisingly intimidated going to the toilet by myself with a load of drunk men. It was a gig with fairly high proportion of men and I genuinly felt scared going to the toilet when Im nornally someone whos quite comfortable at gigs, going to the toilet alone etc. Will be avoiding that venue from now on, it is 100% discriminatory against women as ultimately it is women whos facilities have been taken away and men who have gained facilities

CarrotSticks19 · 18/11/2021 23:19

I think whats intimidating is yes the majority of men would use the urinals, however there were definitely quite a few that didnt. And the type of man who choses not to use the urinals in this situation is probanly the type of man I dont want to be alone in the toilets with

Men pee in cubicles as well. And walk right past women queueing for cubicles as if they're invisible.

TyphooMary · 18/11/2021 23:28

Depending on the venue, I'd be quite happy to know I could skip the longer queue and use my shewee.

I'm not bothered by unisex toilets, as long as it's balanced and this clearly isn't - so after a few men complain about women coming into the urinals, maybe they'll do something about it.

Because most people listen when men use their voice.

Kendodd · 18/11/2021 23:29

Ooh this makes me so angry, not just the changes here but the fact that generally in life, women have to wait for the toilet and men don't.

LittlePearl · 18/11/2021 23:31

Please contact the venue OP. Make your objections / concerns known to them.

If I've understood correctly mixed sex facilities must (legally) include floor to ceiling walls with basins and sanitary product bins in the cubicle itself. Was this the case?

Tippexy · 18/11/2021 23:32

One of the worst things of unisex toilets is that the men make the women’s loos absolutely disgusting. Piss all over the floor, piss all over the upturned loo seat. Barely wash their hands. Envy
