To expect a cleaner to..

Do the separately paid for oven clean after the normal cleaning hour(s)?

So normal cleaning hours are 2 hours a week, two of them come though so they’re only here one hour. I asked for an oven clean to be done this time too, paid extra (equivalent of almost another 2 hours). Returned after the hour and they were going.

I didn’t say anything because it’s all very lovely, as usual, but AIBU to have had an afterthought that it should be done after the normal time we pay for?

It depends. If there was enough normal work to do for the usual hours, then no, not unreasonable. If there wasn't, what do you want her to do?

WWTD2020 · 18/11/2021 16:08

There are no set jobs weekly just ‘please help with what you can’ type of thing so they just keep going until the clock stops with hoovering/mop/dust/mirrors/windows. It varies of course because sometimes there’s a pile of dishes and two manky bathrooms we haven’t had time to look at but others we’ve kept it pretty clean.

So they owe you an hour each still?

Bigfathairyones · 18/11/2021 16:10

I agree with you and would expect some additional time to be spent if additional monies had been paid.

girlmom21 · 18/11/2021 16:13

Is the oven clean? Is everything else clean? Are there other things they could have cleaned?

dementedpixie · 18/11/2021 16:13

Did you specify you want it done in addition to the usual jobs and that they would need to stay longer than usual?

WanderleyWagon · 18/11/2021 16:15

Given the amount, I'd also expect this to have been done outside the usual hours, but if you didn't specify this in advance and if they are good cleaners, I wouldn't push it. I would, however, raise it with them next time and say something like: I just wanted to check that I hadn't got the wrong end of the stick: I thought that the extra money for the oven clean was because it would be extra time on top of the usual clean - is this not the case? Then see what they say.

Then I'd let it go, but when you get it done next, whenever that is, make clear in advance that this should be done in extra time.

Good cleaners are like gold dust, and it's worth making a bit of extra effort to keep them happy :)

Pinkchocolate · 18/11/2021 16:15

If you paid for an extra two hours then that’s what I’d expect unless your house was spotless and there really was nothing they could have been doing.

MichelleScarn · 18/11/2021 16:15

Do you not pay 2hrs because 2 people doing 1 hour each = 2 hours work?

Derbee · 18/11/2021 16:20

You’ve paid for 4 hours. They’ve worked for 2. They owe you 2 hours.

If your house was so spotless that there was NOTHING they could do, they shouldn’t have charged the extra time. But seeing as they did charge, they should have both stayed an extra hour (to make 2 hrs)

Derbee · 18/11/2021 16:21

@MichelleScarn

Do you not pay 2hrs because 2 people doing 1 hour each = 2 hours work?
Regardless of what OP pays for, she’s paid double this time and got the same amount of work
TractorAndHeadphones · 18/11/2021 16:21

I think they should have stayed longer -otherwise what was the extra being paid for?

girlmom21 · 18/11/2021 16:26

To be fair to the cleaners, oven cleaning companies charge astronomical fees so even if they did only clean the oven OP probably isn't any worse off than if she'd have paid a different company.

WWTD2020 · 18/11/2021 16:30

It’s almost an extra 2 hours, not quite, £1 off!
But I understand nobody really knows how long it’ll take to clean an oven before they arrive and see it hence the fixed cost.

No there was no agreement prior on timing, house is clean yes so all dishes done and away, baby’s bottles cleaned, hoovered, mopped, two bathrooms and kitchen cleaned (cabinet fronts and so on), dusted, beds made, tv and mirrors cleaned… and the oven 🥲. Yes the oven is sparkling. Almost like new.

Yes Michelle that’s what I put in the OP?

Underthestairsbears · 18/11/2021 16:30

Ok, I'd expect the same as you but perhaps she put some over cleaner or whatever in the oven first and then cleaned everything else before finishing off the oven...?

WWTD2020 · 18/11/2021 16:31

Maybe they’re just hyper efficient!
I’m happy paying for their products and their elbow grease because I’ve tried a few times and failed.

I suppose I just assumed it would be after.

girlmom21 · 18/11/2021 16:32

Honestly if they're doing your babies bottles and dishes too you've found a couple of angels and I definitely wouldn't rock the boat.

WWTD2020 · 18/11/2021 16:34

Ok thanks girlmom I’ll put them on my Christmas present list and think no more of it

DeepaBeesKit · 18/11/2021 16:36

I can't see how it's possible for them to do all the things they usually do that take 2 hours, AND an oven clean, and the oven clean take zero extra time.

I would absolutely object to this.

Pyewackect · 18/11/2021 16:43

My cleaner wouldn't touch the oven. I'd have to get an outside specialist for that, £75-£100 in this area for my style of cooker.

WWTD2020 · 18/11/2021 16:52

Oh wow that’s a lot Pyewackect unless you have an Aga or something

I agree. They’re either taking the piss on this one occasion, or taking the piss at every visit. Neither of which would be ok with me
Newnameforabit · 18/11/2021 16:57

I agree with you but I'd probably leave it this time
You were paying an additional fee for an additional service

Newnameforabit · 18/11/2021 16:58

Ignore me, @Derbee makes a good point

Delatron · 18/11/2021 17:03

I think you needed to be very clear (they may have another job straight after yours). So ‘please can you do an extra hour to cover an over clean and I’ll pay for two hours work’.
