Ridiculous sentence for sex offender

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10212365/Pictured-married-female-maths-teacher-caught-having-sex-teenage-pupil.html

Why are women getting such stupid jail terms for being sex offenders?

Women are getting away this sex offences and getting silly short term jail sentences or not jailed at all.

The media doesn't make these stories as mainstream as male sex offenders.

This is absolutely disgusting and often women who have a duty to keep kids safe are the ones sexually assaulting kids. Mostly teachers.

I suspect the judge knows better than you the appropriate sentence.

BunsOfAnarchy · 17/11/2021 21:21

I thought this also but I think its because (please correct me if I'm wrong), she groomed the girl but didn't start a sexual affair until after the girl had turned 16.
Which in itself is bullshit. As if a birthday changes the entire psyche of a child overnight.
In my eyes, a dirty vile human who should be locked up for longer.

kittenkipper · 17/11/2021 21:52

I'm sad to say that NO ONE is getting any real term ounishment for sex offences. The reality is that rape is practically legal in this country (www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/society/2021/may/23/fewer-than-one-in-60-cases-lead-to-charge-in-england-and-wales) with almost no cases leading to charge at all. The whole system needs to be overhauled to value the victims (largely , overwhelmingly, women and children) over and above the perpetrators

Judges don’t make the sentences up, OP. They’re forced to work within very strict parameters called ‘Sentencing Guidelines’. If you ever sit in court, it’s a fuck-off book on the judge’s bench.

flopjustwantscoffee · 17/11/2021 21:59

Its really terrible. I sort of guessed before reading that the judge would be a male though... I think in general (and this is just a generalisation obviously) women are more likely to be shocked by another woman doing this stuff then men are. (Satirised by that South Park episode). I don't know why that is, but it is an issue I think.

HesterAndPearlInBrightSunshine · 17/11/2021 22:13

It's inadequate for sure. That selfish bitch has scarred someone for life; eight months is too short. Hope the girl gets proper support. However at least they sentenced her.
When exactly that happened to me at 15 with a male teacher who unceremoniously dumped me after a few months, the judge ruled nothing bad had happened because I had been in love. I was suicidal, anorexic, but never mind- I'd been willing...

So, I think at least the victim blaming has decreased and that's something at least.
Perhaps a male teacher might have had a harsher sentence- I don't know. These things were generally tolerated for way too long. But it's good to see grooming finally being better recognised and somewhat better understood.

There was a report I read a few years ago and a majority of male judges admitted that they routinely gave women shorter sentences than men

HesterAndPearlInBrightSunshine · 17/11/2021 22:23

Which is of course bullshit as the damage really lies in the emotional manipulation and the long lasting confusion. Women I suppose can be just as bad. I really don't see why they would make a difference.

The published sentencing reports mostly - but I stress not always - give some indication of the mitigating and aggravating factors that are accounted for in the judges decision. When those reports are properly read they do give some insight as to why the judge places emphasis on particular factors and the duration of sentences they are able to apply.

It can very much work both ways. A mother who killed her children, while under serious mental breakdown, had no minimum tariff because the long road of psychiatric treatment was significant in itself and it was accepted by experts for the Crown and defence to be very seriously unwell and otherwise a loving mother. Contrast that which a murderer who killed her not very nice spouse, where public frustration in her long sentence was pretty knee jerk, without reference to the underlying factors.

Reading some of these reports can be very helpful in understanding how some sentences have been reached.

SirenSays · 18/11/2021 00:41

It's not just women, the male teacher who did this at my school to female students got barely any time.

CheeseMmmm · 18/11/2021 00:44

Sex offenders often get off way too light.

And OP- the media are MORE interested when women/ girls are sex offenders, very violent, murder. Not less.

Because it's so much less common. Why do you think it's the other way around?

mindutopia · 18/11/2021 06:15

Sadly, I think this is quite normal and I’m surprised she got that much. I have a family member who sexually abused his own daughter, pled guilty and was given no prison at all. I know someone else who abused another family member and got 18 months. In both cases, quite serious abuse, grooming, and the children were 12-15 at the time.

This. There are sentencing guidelines. Probation reports. Risk assessments.
