How to manage a manager that speaks too much?

Good evening,

I have started a new role and have a manager is overall kind and personable, but he just talks too much for extended periods of time. It can often feel like you a person present whilst he sounds out his inner monologue. He can also sometimes put his foot in his mouth what what he says.

We don't have too much dealings with each other for the most part, as my role is hugely autonomous, we have team meetings monthly and will have one-to-ones monthly.

At first I thought it may be because he was nervous with new people, but it is known to just be part of his character. I've also been told he is also rather lonely.

Has anyone been in a similar position as myself, and how did you manage this? Any tips?

Thanks

Just nod and smile along. If he's lonely, I wouldn't hurt his feelings by telling him to shush.

Set limits and clear boundaries, but remain polite and kind.

"So lovely to chat to you. Just so you know, I've got a call in 10 minutes. I hope you don't mind...."

" so lovely to chat to you, I've got to complete X by X time. If you need to chat longer, shall we put a meeting in the diary?
