Levelling up was all rhetoric

The local Northern newspapers are all full of the news that the HS2 line is being cancelled from Birmingham to Leeds and also the new high speed line from Leeds to Manchester, but it isn’t even a top 10 story on BBC, sky news, The Times, guardian or FT websites and only made the independent at 5th place as a comment article.

How does the north get its voice across when the news websites don’t write about important issues in the north.

Leeds is the England’s largest financial and legal centre after London. It is a huge contributor towards the UK GDP and yet it is the largest city in Europe without a metro system and a lot of its ring road is single lane road.

Boris thinks moving government department to the north will level it up but there needs to be an investment in its infrastructure, and cancelling HS2 whether you agree with it or not isn’t going to improve the situation. What I want to know is where Rishi is on all this? A lot of northern MPs are pretty vocal about cancelling HS2 but as the only northern MP in Boris’ inner circle he is always noticeably quiet on all things northern.

For an MP trying to level up Boris has chosen probably has the most southern cabinet in a generation (my opinion no source although I’d be interested to know if someone looked it up, apart from Rishi and Ben Wallace there are no MPs from the north in the cabinet so unless a previous PM only had one northern MP I think I’m right).

I've never believed one word of what has come out of this Tory government

KaptainKaveman · 16/11/2021 08:42

"All rhetoric"? you don't say....

I'm still waiting for the £350 million weekly that Boris' Brexit Bus said would be re-allocated to the NHS. I'm expecting it any day now. Oh, wait...

pointythings · 16/11/2021 08:43

Anyone who believed the Tories were ever going to give a shit about the North is deluded.

ssd · 16/11/2021 08:44

Im laughing at the fact you actually believed him in the first place @NorthernDuck

ssd · 16/11/2021 08:46

'The North'

Try being Scottish. We rarely vote tory and overwhelming voted to stay in the EU.

cathyandclare · 16/11/2021 08:49

It's so frustrating- it's quick to get to London from Leeds and Birmingham already. The slow bit is getting from Birmingham to Leeds and getting from Leeds to Manchester. Appalling decision.

BananaPB · 16/11/2021 08:50

Ofc he was full of shit. He wanted votes and has demonstrated time and time again that he's not adverse to lying.

Yes it was only shaving 30 mins off London - Leeds afaik. But it would take 3.5 hours to get me from 30 mins outside Sheffield to East Midlands??? Train infrastructure is just shit.
IRelateToViewpointsNotPeople · 16/11/2021 09:37

This is the thing with politics - people say whatever they can to get votes. The cycle repeats itself everytime but people still believe politicians.

Sadly it's not just the Tories.

This country is unbelievably London and SE England centric. It's gut wrenching at times.

ThreeFeetTall · 16/11/2021 10:06

I'm shocked at how bad the train connections and stock is in the north. And yet the weather in London seems to make the national news Confused

Iputthetrampintrampoline · 16/11/2021 10:07

Sure Boris got confused again,,He wants to level the North as in flatten! Levelling up was a vote stunt,It was never going to happen, Donning my tin hat here but as a life long conservative voter from the North never have I been as ashamed of my party as i have been this past 2 years, Nothing about this current shower of shite in power resembles anything I respect or recognise, I see the chaos, lies, power grabs and corruption being played out daily and shake my head,I didnt have much faith in Boris for I knew he would be incompetent as a leader but thought that sensible policiess would win out,and he would be steered and tamed, however the old guard of whom I did believe in have abandoned all sense and are allowing him to ride roughshod over everything with no restraint, How he is and has behaved is nothing but a scandal. He has to go,

FatOaf · 16/11/2021 10:08

As many people - including some Conservative MPs - keep saying, "levelling up" is a slogan, not a policy. It is something they say to get people to vote for them, not something they have any intention of acting on.

JumperandJacket · 16/11/2021 10:32

Our current PM says whatever he thinks will get him what he wants, without any regard to truth or consequence. The only surprise is that it's taken people so long to realise it.

Wish the Germans or French could take charge of engineering us a new rail network. Bold fast rail systems in both countries purpose built as-new in many places.

Then we’ll have the Swiss run it for us, fully integrated with bus timetables.

Proper countries manage to get this right, why is this one so useless ?
