The local Northern newspapers are all full of the news that the HS2 line is being cancelled from Birmingham to Leeds and also the new high speed line from Leeds to Manchester, but it isn’t even a top 10 story on BBC, sky news, The Times, guardian or FT websites and only made the independent at 5th place as a comment article.
How does the north get its voice across when the news websites don’t write about important issues in the north.
Leeds is the England’s largest financial and legal centre after London. It is a huge contributor towards the UK GDP and yet it is the largest city in Europe without a metro system and a lot of its ring road is single lane road.
Boris thinks moving government department to the north will level it up but there needs to be an investment in its infrastructure, and cancelling HS2 whether you agree with it or not isn’t going to improve the situation. What I want to know is where Rishi is on all this? A lot of northern MPs are pretty vocal about cancelling HS2 but as the only northern MP in Boris’ inner circle he is always noticeably quiet on all things northern.
For an MP trying to level up Boris has chosen probably has the most southern cabinet in a generation (my opinion no source although I’d be interested to know if someone looked it up, apart from Rishi and Ben Wallace there are no MPs from the north in the cabinet so unless a previous PM only had one northern MP I think I’m right).
