Leave my job or stick it out? (Secondary Teaching)

Left my last teaching job as HOD was a psycho. Wasn’t just me, a lot of teachers left due to him. When we spoke to head and SLT we were told that’s just the way he is.

Anyways moved into another job and been there for 2 years. Problem is they are constantly saying they have no money - totally understand this but a lot of us are doing extra roles without the money we should be getting. Main scale teachers are having to justify why they are to be moved up the scale then with enough evidence they still not being moved up. I have never worked in a job where Main scale needs a discussion.

What’s really annoyed me recently is that I’ve made peace with fact my pay won’t go up but they have employed 3 more SLT with huge pay scales. So it’s okay for teachers and support staff to have pay frozen but other people are getting huge wages.

It’s not just the pay situation. I just feel dread going in. I hate working there. I’m taking my annoyance out in my own family. I don’t know what to do. I work part time but even in days off I’m stressing about work. If I leave will I ever get another part time role - that’s what’s keeping me there.

Sounds terrible. It won’t get better. Look for something else - in teaching or out. Where I am there are hundreds of AP jobs at the moment. Doesn’t suit everyone’s skill set but might be right for you.

Online teaching or tutoring?

RedHelenB · 14/11/2021 14:22

Lots of schools have pt teachers, is look at moving if I were you.

jelliedeells · 14/11/2021 14:24

Could you do supply teaching until you find a permanent role?

InTheLabyrinth · 14/11/2021 14:24

I'd think youd get plenly of supply right now, given how much illness is going round.
Can you quit, sign on for supply, and get looking for a PT job?
Or is the risk of no income too great?

Main scale teachers aren’t being moved up? That’s unusual. I think you should move. My only caveat is that I saw very few posts being advertised last year, I was looking, still am, HoD is as your old one, everyone comes to me to moan, I’ve told them to stop bitching and to go to him direct, I don’t like the whole talking behind his back. I think my head would give the same response as yours. Painful.
