Are you a vegan? Would you like this gift?

My friend is a vegetarian she often does vegan month and is mostly vegan but not strictly.
I found what I thought was a lovely gift so I bought it for her and another for a relative.
It’s a ‘pearl necklace’ as in it comes with a locket and a clam and you break the clam open and there’s a ‘real’ pearl inside.
It just stuck me that clams are real living ?things? until someone pulls them out the ocean. I cant give it can I ?

Yeah that probably wouldn't work for most vegans. But if she is vegetarian she may wear leather etc.

I'd politely accept it however I wouldn't wear it and would probably regift it.

It depends how strict she is though, I'll wear leather that I purchased before going vegan for example but I know others wont.

I don't think it's a good idea. Even though she's not a full vegan she seems to aspire to be.

Yep, I do wonder why pearls are still a thing, when stuff like ivory etc is looked down on.

Years ago, I went to the main Jersey Pearl shop in um... Jersey. They had a tank there of live clams that you could pick one from. They take it out the tank, cut it open, give you your pearl(s), and then chuck the clam in a bin to die.

Yep, depending on how strict they are being vegan, I can't see that being appreciated, sorry, even if they don't say anything on being gifted it!

I probably wouldn't particularly like this tbh. It's a lovely gesture to get her a gift but not really in the spirit of avoiding animal products.

@ANameChangeAgain yes it’s genuine! It never crossed my mind about the clam being a living thing in the ocean! I bought it from a gift shop in an aquarium!

Those things are fake as well, they open the clam up to put the fake pearl inside. It's a revolting idea and as a vegan if you gave me that I think I'd go off you for life.
