Aibu to consider a wool mattress

Inspired by recent threads my mattress is coming towards the end of its live. I don't like memory foam as I find it too soft. I have heard about wool mattresses and duvet covers. Has anyone got one personally are they worth the cost?

You mean wool covered?

I have a wool duvet and a wool pillow and love them. We are replacing our bed soon and will go for a wool covered mattress. Not decided exactly where from yet.

knittingaddict · 12/11/2021 13:12

I should have said wool padded.

Ibleedibreedibreaatfeed · 12/11/2021 14:11

What do you like about them?

We have one, from John Lewis. It's nice, very comfy. I really dislike memory foam as it's too hot and also makes my hips ache for some reason

outdooryone · 12/11/2021 14:16

I've a new wool mattress and spent last decade sleeping on a memory foam topped mattress.
I sleep better (no surprises, it is new and cost a few quid), but biggest thing I notice is that the memory foam used to get hotter and hotter through the night - where this doesn't feel like that at all.
I am saving to treat myself to a sheep wool or alpaca wool duvet and pillows for Christmas.

I have a wool topped mattress, wool duvet and wool pillows. Wool is an incredible material and a really good thermal regulator so you don't get too hot or too cold.

Consider potential allergies and itchiness

Ibleedibreedibreaatfeed · 12/11/2021 14:38

Yes I get very warm and prefer to have the window open even in the winter! Was wondering if it was scratchy? And how does it get washed?

@mustlovegin

Consider potential allergies and itchiness
I'm very sensitive to wool and can't wear it next to my skin and never had a problem with a wool duvet or pillows.

I assume that the mattresses op is talking about are sprung with wool padding and a cotton or silk or bamboo outer layer. You don't have contact with the wool usually.

knittingaddict · 12/11/2021 14:40

Op can you do a link to the ones you are talking about?

knittingaddict · 12/11/2021 14:42

I like wool bedding because it helps to regulate your body temperature. Warm when it needs to be, but not overheating.

I'm like you op and have no heating at night and bedroom windows open even on the coldest days.

Nights not days

Weve bought a wool mattress from the wool roon and its wonderful. Also had wool duvets for 30 years - wouldn't buy anything else.

The wool is inside the mattress as padding.

We have a baavet wool duvet. It’s fantastic. I’m never too hot or cold. It’s one of the best things we’ve ever bought. Last year we bought a wool topped Hypnos mattered and to be quite honest every single night I’m always thrilled about just how comfortable my bed is! It’s those little things in life that I enjoy.

LefttoherownDevizes · 12/11/2021 14:59

I have moved all of us onto Baavet woollen duvets, absolute game changer.

DH suffers terribly from night sweats, I'm the opposite and am ice maiden at night, we're a veritable Jack S pratt and his wife. We were about to get two separate duvets when we saw Baavet at an agricultural show. They explained how well worked and have us a demo.

Honestly haven't looked back, I am allergic to wool and cannot wear anything with even 1% would but an absolutely fine.

DCs have asthma and one has really severe and varied allergies, including dust mites. They've been much better since we moved them onto wool, apparently the mites can't live in the wool.

To clean you hang outside on a sunny day (after seeing what magic the sun can perform on makes I believe this helps), and you can spot clean or at a pinch fully wash the duvet gently.

I now pine for a matching mattress, but no way can afford at the moment

Have a go, they offer a 30 day returns policy if you don't get on

The typos Blush I meant nappies!

Yes, this is what I have, and it's brilliant. I'm also allergic to wool.
ChardonnaysPetDragon · 12/11/2021 17:09

I have one and it’s very comfortable.

Also lighter than normal mattresses and easier to remove and clean under the bed.
