I am a former footballer (with scars on my knees to prove it) and I would love if we could help each other out and make new lyrics to the chants that are feminist. Like "I promise not to beet my wife when I get home"

Try it at a match and let us know how you get on.

Falcor · 10/11/2021 22:47

I just did

So how did you get on

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/11/2021 23:06

Not sure that's how VAW works

Imaystillbedrunk · 10/11/2021 23:09

Wouldn’t it be better to try and raise the profile of the womens game? Support your local grassroots team? Help out at a wildcat session 🤷‍♀️ Make the next generation more inclusive

Falcor · 10/11/2021 23:29

One does not exclude the other. Last weekend at Old Trafford (Man United have the worst treatment of their female team, look it up) I tried to get a bunch of hooligans to sing that they promise not to hit anyone on their way home

My tiny contribution to this is to always sing along to the lines “xxx boys we are here woah woah” with the less misogynistic “RESPECT your women and drink your beer”. I don’t think anyone notices or cares, but it makes me feel better Football

The Manchester United (women) team can not use the same facilities as the men´s team. They have to shower at home.

We don't sing shit like that at my club, it's all songs about the players and the city. Maybe I could start belting out Si Senora or something?

CouncilHousedAndViolentBaby · 11/11/2021 00:04

Is this a joke

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/11/2021 00:18

Is this a joke
No. Jokes are funny.

@Falcor THANK 👏 YOU👏
I hate England sometimes. The fact that if we lose the football, domestic abuse and sexual assault increase by loads, when they're already insanely high. And the fact that we're the only country where this happens.

Don't be so ridiculous.

What is the original text of these chants? I feel I’m missing part of the story here. Are they singing anything about “their” women normally?

Catdogmum · 11/11/2021 06:26

@Bionicname in the chant I shared, they sing “shag” in place of respect. It is one of the few things I hate about going to football. Over the past few seasons, I have noticed that there seem to be more people who feel uncomfortable about this particular line and that they seem to belt out the first line, mumble a bit then belt out “drink your beer”. It has been the subject of some debate on my club’s fan forum and, thankfully, lots of men agreed that it’s awful. Not enough to stop singing it though Hmm

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 11/11/2021 06:31

I think challenging toxic masculinity needs to come from men tbh. Bloody well done for trying though.

You realise it's not just men that watch foot ball?
If men are going to be abusive then a football game just gives them an excuse ,you thinking banning football would somehow stop abuse ?

Exactly.
I'm definitely for tackling domestic abuse ( it's affected me personally in the past) but blaming football isn't the answer.

Do you know what the common denominators are? Men and alcohol. Domestic abuse rates also soar during bank holidays and during holidays.
How do we tackle that?
