3k for a small move London to Leeds

Am I completely out of touch? We are leaving London and moving a small 2 bed ground floor flat (more like a 1 bed and no white goods) to just outside of Leeds The quotes I’ve had so far are between £2800-£3200. I knew it would not be cheap but this seems crazy! Is it me? Do I need to wise up?

Depends on the level of service.
We move in a few weeks, rented house to rented house. Funnily enough we’re moving way from Leeds.
We’re paying £450 for two blokes to move the boxes, contents of a 3 bed semi 60 miles down the motorway and unload in the new house.
All belongings to be packed by us, we are supplying our own packing material. I think they have a £75 per hour flat rate.

Have you looked at Facebook or gumtree?

If you go to the big companies they will overcharge. Look for a man with a van type of thing.

We paid £1,800 to get packed and moved from Buckinghamshire to Belfast last year. All the local companies quoted £5000+ but the northern Irish company charged under £2k and were bloody brilliant and not a small outfit. In fact, if you can flex on dates it might even be worth asking them for a quote as they're always back and forth and might be able to do it en route to pick up in the south given they come in at Liverpool or Cairnryan. The company we used were Dixonline.

I'd also try some other national or northern regional companies and avoid any near London. The largest quote we had was for £8k at which point we'd have been better off flogging what we can and buying everything again...

Sorry misread and thought you were going Leeds to London not the other way. Have you got quotes from Leeds companies?

I can recommend Shires Removals in Pontefract. We only moved from one part of Leeds to another. They were by far the cheapest quote and really great on the day.
