To be concerned about this sore throat?!

I’ve got an incredibly sore throat, I’ve had it since Wednesday evening/Thursday morning. I just got a torch and looked into the back of my throat, there are patches of redness all over my mouth and throat, all the way to my gums. The back of my throat is red and looks extremely inflamed and sore (it is!). There are no white patches as far as I can see.

When I swallow its agony and I get an intense stabbing pain in my ear too.

I can’t see any swelling, as I was worried about quinsy, but no sign of that.

It seems to be getting worse, not better. I don’t think I’ve ever had a sore throat this bad before.
The little dangly thing at the back of my throat is also patchy red and looks inflamed.

I did a covid test which was negative. I did have one night of fever, then some chills on and off.

I rang the doctors this morning and they’ve prescribed 5 days of antibiotics, just in case. They wouldn’t see me Angry but said it sounded viral, but I think they prescribed the antibiotics just to get me off the phone to be honest.
I’ve had two so far and no improvement.

I’m so fed up now….Sad

Sorry no help but I’ve got the same today.
I’ve had various ailments for 2 weeks now.
It was a cough yesterday.
Every morning I wake up with something different.
Haven’t had anything since first lockdown now it seems everything is coming together.

GoodnightGrandma · 08/11/2021 16:48

Keep going. You need 24/48 hours of antibiotics before you’ll see any improvement

WellLarDeDar · 08/11/2021 16:50

Have you taken any paracetamol/ibuprofen? A lot of the time you have to wait these things out. Sorry you're unwell :(

lynntheyresexpeople · 08/11/2021 16:51

To be honest it does sound viral, In which case the antibiotics won't help. Try gargling with warm salt water, and paracetamol and ibuprofen for the pain.

TotallySuper · 08/11/2021 16:52

There was another thread just like this a day or so ago. Must be something going around. YABU to think antibiotics would help after taking just 2. Get ultra chloroseptic throat spray.

FionnulaTheCooler · 08/11/2021 16:53

I've had a similar sounding throat infection before and the antibiotics didn't really make a difference until 3 or 4 days in. Try gargling with some salty water for short term relief, it tastes vile but I found it really did help with the pain.

mewkins · 08/11/2021 16:54

If it gets worse rather than better it could be quinsy. I had it a few years ago. Three doctors told me it was just a viral thing. In the end I dragged myself to urgent care and they took me in overnight to go on a drip. Google the symptoms and see if they fit. It is agony.

Janaih · 08/11/2021 16:56

Gargle with diluted tcp and get some co codamol tablets which you can alternate with ibuprofen.

Vitamin c and zinc tablets wouldn't hurt, along with plenty of fluids.

Hope you feel better soon Flowers

exexpat · 08/11/2021 16:57

Was your covid test a lateral flow or PCR? If it was just LFT, I wouldn't trust the negative result and I'd get a PCR. A sore throat is one of the most common symptoms of the current type of covid; one of my friends had it pretty badly recently, and the sore throat was the worst bit.

Wynston · 08/11/2021 16:59

Chloroseptic throat spray op. Hope you feel better soon.

mineofuselessinformation · 08/11/2021 17:00

Try difflam spray for the pain. If you can get them, get lozenges with anaesthetic in too.

Greyeverywhere · 08/11/2021 17:02

I have had this for a week now.
Same red inflamed throat and I've got no voice at all. I've been gargling and steaming and it's getting ever so slightly better.
I need it to go as I'm due a baby anyday now and I cant communicate with anyone!

bizarrustii · 08/11/2021 17:06

Difflam spray along with 4hourly alternating ibuprofen with paracetamol for pain relief. Fingers crossed 48 hours on the antibiotics will see a difference.

hellsbells99 · 08/11/2021 17:21

I would go and get a pcr test after looking at some of the threads on here. Hope you feel better soon

Budapestdreams · 08/11/2021 17:23

I would get another PCR test too. You may have tested too early. Sore throat is a common symptom of Covid.

YukoandHiro · 08/11/2021 17:24

Sounds like bad tonsillitis. They should have prescribed 10 days of antibiotics

usernumberno46273 · 08/11/2021 17:25

Throat infections can be bleddy nasty. I have been prone to them and have been woken at night by the pain and ended your crying with it - usually have a high pain threshold!!

Alternate ibuprofen and paracetamol as well as your antibiotics.

Ice lollies and ice cream

When I have a bad throat McDonald's milkshake is my go to.

Strepsils!

Hot chocolate!

Soft foods

Can also buy all sorts of other things from chemist. Strepsils are my go to.

Also heard that salt and vinegar crisps help a lot - sounds crazy. All about killing off the virus/bacteria and soothing. Will try it next time to get a bad throat.

Moroccanlight · 08/11/2021 17:28

Would covid give me red raw patches in my mouth? And ear pain when swallowing?

I mean it's a possibility that it's covid but IMO likely just to be a throat infection given the symptoms. I get stinging/sore ears with a bad throat - it's all linked together. The red patches with tonsillitis are common, nasty though! Feel better soon.
Iwantitthatway · 08/11/2021 17:47

I’ve just recovered from something similar! I’ve actually had a quinsy seven times in my life (have since had my tonsils removed thankfully) but I said to my husband how much it reminded me of it! It definitely felt very different to a normal sore throat, pain in the ear too and enlarged glands, took more than a week to recover from!
I really hope you feel better soon, it was definitely blooming awful for me so take it easy as much as you can!

Moroccanlight · 08/11/2021 18:11

@YukoandHiro wouldn’t tonsillitis have white spots in my throat? Mine is just red raw.

Hugoslavia · 09/11/2021 10:13

I really feel for you. Sore throats are awful. I appreciate that it is most probably viral.and that a Dr most probably wouldn't be able to make it better. However, I do feel as though your Dr should have seen and examined you!

caringcarer · 09/11/2021 10:16

Definitely Cloroseptic throat spray numbs the pain. Antibiotics do take 48 hours to kick in. I've cream is good too.

Dancingfairydreams · 09/11/2021 10:46

Honestly, get a pcr, this is how I started, had this for a week, then a cough. Had negative lfts for 5 days...don't trust them anymore!
