Can anyone I. T. litererate help me buy a decent but not too expensive laptop?

I bought one about 5 years and it was and has always been really shit. Mostly because it's incredibly slow. I want it writing, admin, photo books, family videos. I want it to be efficient, reliable and fast. Can anyone help me? Im really clueless.

Is there an independent computer store in your area? Don't go to somewhere like PC World - the staff there know next to nothing, in my experience. Try the little shop in the market that mostly does repairs and sells extra bits of kit. You're more likely to get someone who knows what's available in your price range, and can give sensible advice.
