WhatsApp security code - help!

PissyMum · 04/11/2021 23:49

Sorry posting here for traffic. I’ve just gone into my WhatsApp messages and for all my most recent chats it says ‘security code changed. Tap to learn more’. Then when I tap it says it changed because there was a login or logout from one or more of my devices. I only have WhatsApp on my phone and I definitely haven’t logged out. I can’t find much clearer information anywhere.

I very recently found out that my ex husband had been spying on me for years with spycams and I confronted him about it a few days ago. He denied all knowledge of course. Ex is very technically savvy, his job is basically online security systems and now I’m having an absolute panic that he’s been reading my WhatsApp conversations. Lots of chat with my boyfriend and a few shitty messages about ex husband between my sister and I.

Until a few days ago I thought ex and I had a perfectly amicable separation and he was basically a good guy but it didn’t work out. Now I don’t know what to think but he has keys to my house still and I can’t sleep panicking that he’s reading my WhatsApp messages and going to do something. Can anyone help?

Get the keys off him

DontBeADodo · 04/11/2021 23:54

And don't use WhatsApp anymore

Normando91 · 04/11/2021 23:56

Oh christ… no real advice here but I’d definitely be getting a new number and changing the locks immediately!

faq.whatsapp.com/general/security-and-privacy/about-security-code-change-notifications/?lang=en

At times, the security codes used in end-to-end encrypted chats between you and one other person might change. This is likely because you or your contact reinstalled WhatsApp, changed phones, or added or removed a paired device. You can always verify that a contact's security code is legitimate.

Calm down.
This appears to be because you or someone you message on whatsapp has reinstalled it. Not that your ex has been reading your messages

I'd still change your locks though but not because of whatsapp

Laura543 · 05/11/2021 06:41

I have received the exact same message as you yesterday. I am a bit confused because I haven’t logged out or logged into a different device, as WhatsApp tells me.

OnTimeStillLate · 05/11/2021 06:49

I received a message yesterday telling me my WhatsApp has been registered on a new device and giving me a code to enter and I know nothing about it. I've just ignored it. It sounds like there has been some data blip at WhatsApp or something as I have no one who would bother to try and hack mine.

PissyMum · 05/11/2021 06:57

Phew. Thank you, that’s reassuring.

mojomoon I’ve had the message in all the chats that I was active in yesterday, it’s not just one person which is why it’s concerned me. I definitely haven’t logged out and neither have at least two of the people I’ve been chatting to.

Locks are definitely getting changed. It’s all got very weird very quickly.

It sound like you're seeing message that tells you your contact has changed their phone, if so it's a totally normal message, no need for alarm

MichaelGovesBeard · 05/11/2021 07:03

Just checked and I’ve got the same message on all my chats. Maybe all will be revealed later but it’s def not just you.

Whirlywooo · 05/11/2021 07:23

There was a 'thing' on FB I saw a while back that said Whatsapp would stop working on some certain phone models after 1st November. I remembered it because my phone model was on the list of ones where Whatsapp would stop working. My whatsapp is fine though. I wonder your situation is something to do with that notice??

Whirlywooo · 05/11/2021 07:29

Just did a quick google search and found this link about security codes:

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 05/11/2021 07:45

I’ve had the same message on all of my chats too and I’ve not changed a thing. Must be some WhatsApp update or blip on their end. I wouldn’t worry too much.

HoldingOnForBetterTimes · 05/11/2021 07:59

Me too. Same message on all of my chats .
Around 11.20 pm last night. I found this thread because I was panicking too!

PissyMum · 05/11/2021 08:18

I’m glad it’s not just me. Weird that it’s happening to everyone though.

whiskersonkittenss · 05/11/2021 08:22

Me too

Hira024 · 05/11/2021 08:29

Guys, I received same message like yours, my phone is iphone 6s. I turned off my phone yesterday and thern turned on today morning and received message “your security code changed” I clicked to know why? It said because of log in or log out from different devices however I just used my computer whatsapp web and log out yesterday. It is first time I encountered with such a problem. Why it can be so?

Camillekz · 05/11/2021 08:40

Hello everyone no worries I have the same message today and I m coming here because I was worry about too. It seems to be a glitch so don’t worry

Haybee3030 · 05/11/2021 09:01

I’ve woke up this morning and have the exact same. Been looking online for the last hour until I came across this thread. Weird because so many say they have the same issue so I’m thinking “ah it’s everyone” but then my mum has just said she hasn’t had anything Confused

Stitch2018 · 05/11/2021 09:13

Ive had the exact same message this morning, but i have messaged other family members who are on whatsapp and none of them have had the message either……..it’s certainly not everyone but seems a few of us here have had it. Its strange thing i shall be deleting and not re downloading. Ive been on their facebook page and their recent post comments a couple of people have mentioned it there also just so weird. Not a risk i want to take

Hira024 · 05/11/2021 09:26

I don’t have facebook, can someone please mention? What people comment about this glitch? Is it a big threat? Kind of hacking or??

Stitch2018 · 05/11/2021 09:42

Some people have just said they have the same message but not many people, i just find it very strange. Ive asked 10 family members and none of them have had the message what i have had.

Angrybird1972 · 05/11/2021 10:40

I have the same message all over, but nothing in others’ phones. Is this an issue with with iPhone users, or Android too?

SirensofTitan · 05/11/2021 11:03

Hey, I had exact the same thing happened to me this morning and had similar worries but it seems like it happened to many people so hopefully nothing to worry about.

Gabs1234 · 05/11/2021 11:53

Mines the same, all my chats have that message
