To not know how to sort this? Post / customs

I have a friend in the US who said she has sent me a birthday present. DH said he thought something came in the post about customs but threw it away as we hadn't ordered anything. How do I now find this?

She has said it will be with Royal Mail but will it, if is with customs. I didn't think so.

Can you ask your local post office branch?

EileenGC · 31/10/2021 15:08

I sent my friends a parcel a few months back and their customs notification came through with Royal Mail. That might not always be the case though, I’m not sure.

CorrBlimeyGG · 31/10/2021 15:11

Was it a letter or a card through the door?

Yogaandcocoa · 31/10/2021 15:17

It was a letter, A4 piece of paper in an envelope

Not sure whether it said Royal Mail on but he thought it said customs to be paid

Binned it as was not expecting anything and thought I told him to bin it

Has she got a tracking number? Usually its royal mail or parcelforce once in the U.K if she sent it by mail.

starfishmummy · 31/10/2021 15:25

I think Royal Mail collwct the fees for Customs

Yogaandcocoa · 31/10/2021 15:27

She doesn't seem to have any info.

If you sign up with Royal Mail to get tracking details etc you should be able to access it through that.

What do you mean?

I have been on Royal Mail to book a redelivery but don't have any of the details and presumably won't work if I need to pay customs

If the person sending has a USPS tracking number, I believe you can find it on the RM system
Alternatively call in to your local delivery office with ID, copy of email from your friend, and pay

Willowwarble · 31/10/2021 15:40

I don't know how expensive your gift was but you only pay customs on gifts over £145 and VAT if over £39. You get a red RM card saying there is fee to pay before they can deliver. You will need the reference number as RM will not trace or give you the number by name and address.

Yogaandcocoa · 31/10/2021 16:43

I think it was some kind of letter saying there was a customs fee to be paid

@Yogaandcocoa

www.royalmail.com/receiving

Go down the page and there's an app. Once you're registered with your address anything sent that needs signed for, missed parcels, customs etc will show.

Yogaandcocoa · 31/10/2021 20:29

@Brusca I've downloaded the app

Where would it show customs items etc?

I've been through the rigmarole of trying to arrange a redlivery and it's the same as on the site

Is there another way to see pending items that have not been delivered? I can't work it out

Yogaandcocoa · 31/10/2021 20:40

Is it likely the Royal Mail office would be able to help with v little info?

OP posts:
Brusca · 31/10/2021 20:48

Are you certain it was being delivered by Royal Mail?

Brusca · 31/10/2021 20:49

Because thinking about it they don't send a letter, just a red card.

Yogaandcocoa · 31/10/2021 21:06

No I have no idea who it is with

All u know is friend says she sent a parcel and I haven't got it

DH said there was a customs letter but that could be unrelated or a scam for all we know

OP posts:
Yogaandcocoa · 31/10/2021 21:07

It wasn't a red card and I didn't think it was Royal Mail until someone said it would be abs friend thinks so but doesn't seem to be able to explain anything

It's unlikely to be 'with customs'. RM are just holding surely until customs duty has been paid?? Contact your local sorting office and ask.

What's with all the exclamation marks??

I honestly don't know who has the item if there's a deliver charge.

I might see if I can call the sorting office as I don't have time to go in.

Your friend needs to tell you what service they used when sending from the US - the USPS office will have given her a receipt and a tracking number

DuckWithOneWing · 01/11/2021 08:45

It might be FedEx. They do international post, and they would send a letter about customs whereas royal mail would send a card

Yogaandcocoa · 01/11/2021 08:47

So I may contact fedex then thank you

She said she can't find the tracking info

I think she's getting annoyed with me for bit just going to the post office but I haven't had time and especially don't want to go there if it will yield no result!
